UCO Beats SCSU To Advance To Regional Final

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat St. Cloud State 9-4 Friday night in the NCAA Central Region II Consolation Final and extended its season one more day.

"We just keep battling," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "You don't want to find yourself in the consolation bracket but if that happens then you better be ready to go to battle and that's what we did. I'm proud of the team for that and we need to keep battling tomorrow."

The Bronchos – now 38-19 on the season – will face Central Missouri in the finals Saturday at 9 a.m. UCO will need to beat the Mules of Warrensburg twice to take a spot in the NCAA Central Super Regional. UCM downed the Bronchos earlier Friday to advance to the final and send UCO to the consolation bracket. The Bronchos responded though with a strong performance Friday night.

Spencer Van Scoyoc led the way. The junior out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who made his first start as a position player Thursday, went 4-for-5 with four singles and three RBIs. The pitcher/outfielder was crucial in Central Oklahoma's 12-hit parade. His fourth single of the game came in the top of the seventh and scored the go-ahead run for the Bronchos.

TJ Black and Kyle Crowl also had multi-hit games for Central Oklahoma. Black went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Crowl went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and had UCO's only extra-base hit of the game, a double in the third.

Landon Bond picked up the win for his relief effort Friday night. He earned a win against St. Cloud State Thursday night too – also in relief – and is now 7-0 on the season. Bond threw two innings of work, the fifth and the sixth, and allowed just two hits and one run to the seven batters he faced.

Central Oklahoma struck first and struck in the first Friday. Black led off the game with an infield single. Philip Scott followed with a single of his own. Though Black was caught stealing at third, Scott made his way to third on a fielder's choice by Crowl. The two then executed a double steal to perfection and Scott gave the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

SCSU tied it in the bottom of the first, but UCO had an answer in the third. Crowl knocked a one-out double, then scored on Taylor Avila's single to left center. Avila would score a few plays later when Van Scoyoc hit his second single of the game. That made it 3-1, UCO.

SCSU again tied it up, this time in the fourth, and then took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. But UCO had a big inning coming and took the game over in the top of the seventh.

Black led off with a walk before Scott flew out to center. Crowl then singled before Avila struck out. It looked like UCO would be in trouble with two early outs, but after Paul Kropf drew a walk to load the bases, Van Scoyoc ripped his fourth single in as many at bats and UCO had a 5-4 lead.

The Bronchos weren't done.

TK McWhertor followed with a single to score Kropf. Dru Barrier drew a walk to load the bases again. Then Black – in his second at bat of the inning – smacked a single to center field that scored Van Scoyoc and McWhertor and gave the Bronchos a 9-4 lead.

UCO's offense didn't threaten again, but the damage was done.

Junior Obeso replaced Bond and threw two solid innings, allowed three hits but no runs or walks. He struck out one batter. Josh Rutland then came on in the ninth and struck out one of the three batters he faced to close the door on the Broncho victory. Brayden Nelson got the start for UCO. He threw four innings and allowed six hits and three runs. He struck out three.

UCO's pitching staff did not walk a batter Friday night.

Central Oklahoma will face off with Central Missouri for the sixth time this season Saturday morning. UCO took two of three from UCM in the regular season in Warrensburg. UCM won last weekend in the MIAA Championship, as well as Friday morning in the regional semifinal. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
