Broncho Season Ends In Regional Final

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team's 2019 season came to an end Sunday after an 8-5 loss to Central Missouri in the NCAA Central Region II Final.

The Bronchos finished the season 38-20.

"It is never good when it ends earlier than you want it to," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "I want to thank each and every one of our student athletes for all they did for this team this season and over the past few seasons. These guys are a great group of kids and they are most definitely appreciated."

Central Oklahoma needed to beat Central Missouri twice Sunday to advance to the Super Regionals next weekend. The Bronchos – who started the game Saturday morning before a rain delay suspended play for entire day – came out quick to get ahead in the game Sunday.

The Bronchos began the day with runners on second and third and nobody out in the bottom of the first inning. TJ Black and Philip Scott got on base with a hit by pitch and a walk on Saturday before the rain came. Back-to-back RBI groundouts Sunday as play resumed by Kyle Crowl and Spencer Van Scoyoc gave Central a 2-0 lead in the game.

But UCM responded with one run in the second, two in the third, and four in the fourth to build a lead it wouldn't relinquish on Sunday.

Van Scoyoc got the start on the mound Saturday and was dominant through the one inning of play. He came back Sunday to throw as play resumed and though he did get the first two batters he saw to groundout, UCM would soon find the timing and chased Van Scoyoc after just 3 1/3. The junior lefty finished with three strikeouts. He allowed five runs on six hits and two walks.

Van Scoyoc did remain in the lineup Sunday. He started the game not only pitching, but batting in the four-spot for the Broncho offense. He made his first start as a position player in the regional tournament and was 8-for-12 with a double and three RBIs. Sunday, he went 0-for-4.

Landon Bond replaced Van Scoyoc in the top of the fourth inning. He allowed a pair of runs on two hits but did strikeout three batters. The three Ks for Bond moved him to 94 for the season, which is tied for fifth-most in one season in school history.

Central Oklahoma added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Crowl smacked a solo home run. UCO got one more in the fifth on an RBI single by Black that scored TK McWhertor. Down 8-4, the Bronchos got one more run on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning when Kace Massner trotted home off a single  by Joe Mondragon.

Junior Obeso came on to replace Bond. He threw 2 1/3 and allowed two hits and one run, striking out two on the way. Josh Rutland finished off the game, throwing the ninth. He allowed two hits in one inning but nothing more.

Central Oklahoma finishes its season 38-20. It's the third consecutive year for the Bronchos to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. UCO has played in a regional final in two of three of those years.
