Central Oklahoma Downed In Regional Play

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped a 6-1 NCAA Tournament second round matchup to Central Missouri Friday afternoon. UCO will play in the consolation final Friday night in an elimination game against the winner of Missouri Southern and St. Cloud State.

Central Oklahoma scattered nine hits Friday, but couldn't push more than one run across the board. The Bronchos left eight runners on the bases.

"We didn't do a good enough job moving runners around," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We needed to make every base runner count and we didn't do that today. Now we got our backs against the wall and it's time to fight to keep our season going a little longer."

Dylan Hall got the start for the Bronchos Friday. The junior ace threw just five innings though, allowing 10 hits and five runs. He did strike out two batters and never allowed a walk.

Central Missouri got a single on the first at bat of the game, and would score on a groundout later in the inning. That would be a sign of things to come.

UCM scattered 14 hits on the day to get six runs. The Mules worked their baserunners around throughout the game and scored consistently too. UCO gave up a run in the first and second inning, three in the fifth, and one more in the eighth.

UCO's only run came in the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff double by Kyle Crowl got it started. Joe Mondragon then laid down a bunt to move Crowl over but reached on a throwing error by the UCM catcher. Then Taylor Avila knocked a sacrifice fly to left that scored Crowl and put UCO on the board. That made it 2-1 heading to the fifth. But a three-run inning by the Mules put UCM back in the driver seat.

Spencer Van Scoyoc led UCO at the plate Friday. He went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles. Crowl went 2-for-3 with a double, a single, and a run scored. TK McWhertor also had a two-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Central Oklahoma needs to win Friday night to extend its season. It would then need to beat Central Missouri twice Saturday to advance out of the NCAA Regional.
