Bronchos Blank Lions In MIAA Tournament

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Missouri Southern 2-0 Friday afternoon to advance in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament.

Central Oklahoma is now 35-16 on the season with the win. The Bronchos will play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.

"We really fought hard today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We keep saying that we're riding our pitching staff and today was no different. They were great and we did just enough to get a win. Survive and advance."

Central has now thrown 18 shutout innings in the MIAA Tournament.

UCO struck first Friday afternoon. Kyle Crowl found a single up the middle with one out in the top of the fourth inning. Joe Mondragon then drilled a 1-1 pitch to left in the next at bat that landed in for a triple. Crowl scored to give UCO a 1-0 lead. Taylor Avila then followed with a double to right center to score Mondragon and make it 2-0.

That was it for the Broncho offense. UCO scattered seven hits on the day, but couldn't get any more across home plate. The pitching staff didn't need any more though.

Gabe Littlejim got the start for the Bronchos. He was solid, throwing six shutout innings for the Bronchos. He allowed six hits and a walk, but Missouri Southern left five on base during Littlejim's outing. Littlejim struck out five.

Landon Bond replaced Littlejim to start the seventh inning. He came out of the bullpen and fired away three-straight strikeouts to preserve a Broncho lead. Bond came back in the bottom of the eighth and struck out another before being replaced by Junior Obeso. Bond's fourth strikeout was his 85th of the season, which moved him into a tie for 10th place on the UCO single season strikeout list.

Obeso got a pop fly and a strikeout of his own to get UCO out of the eighth. Josh Rutland then came on in the ninth to close it out for the Bronchos and after allowing a leadoff walk, Rutland struck out the next two and then got a pop fly for the final out of the game.

UCO struck out 12 on the day. The Bronchos are now up to 501 strikeouts on the season in 453 innings of work.

Central Oklahoma will not find out its next opponent until 30 minutes before its next game. Pittsburg State and Central Missouri play later Friday. The loser of the game will face off with Missouri Western Saturday at 4 p.m. The winner of that game will take on the Bronchos at 7 p.m. Saturday.
