Bronchos Edged By Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Pittsburg State Saturday night at Al Ortolani Field in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament.

The loss was the first of the conference tournament for UCO, which as a result, set up a rematch between PSU and Central Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in a winner-take-all consolation final. Missouri Southern and Central Missouri will play at 9 a.m. in the other consolation final to see who plays for the MIAA Championship Sunday at 4 p.m.

"They battled for that and we knew that would happen," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "They got a heck of a start from (Dante) Richardson and they deserve to win when they play like they did tonight."

Richardson threw a complete game, striking out 12 Bronchos and allowing only five hits and one run.

Pittsburg State struck first Saturday night. The Gorillas snuck a single in with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. TJ Black made every effort to stop a shot up the middle, sliding to his knees and grabbing the ball and quickly firing over to first. It wasn't in time though and PSU followed with two more singles, the latter scoring the first run of the MIAA Tournament against the Bronchos.

UCO went 20-straight innings of shutout baseball before PSU ended that run in the second.

Pitt State made it 2-0 in the sixth, following a pair of leadoff singles with an RBI double to give PSU a lead.

UCO finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Dru Barrier led off with a double down the left field line. He moved over to third on a groundout by Ryan Harrel and scored on a groundout by Black. That made it a 2-1 game.

Brayden Nelson got the start for the Bronchos Saturday night. He entered the game 6-0 with a 1.64 earned run average. He gave up seven hits and both runs to PSU. He did strike out five in his six innings of work. Landon Bond replaced Nelson in the seventh and despite giving up three walks in the inning, he got a fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Junior Obeso replaced Bond in the bottom of the eighth. He allowed a leadoff walk, but after a strikeout, picked off the Pitt State runner. He then got a second strikeout to get out of the inning and give the Bronchos a fighting chance in the ninth.

But it wasn't meant to be for the Bronchos Saturday night.

Kyle Crowl, Taylor Avila, and Barrier each went 1-for-4 with a double to lead UCO Saturday night. Black and Philip Scott also added a pair of singles on the night as UCO scattered just five hits against Pitt State.
