Bronchos Fall In Regular Season Finale

PITTSBURG, Kan. (April 27) – Top-ranked Central Oklahoma dropped a 5-3 decision to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Pittsburg State in the second game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader to end the regular season.

The Bronchos took the opener 4-1 and had 10 hits in the nightcap, but stranded nine runners and the Gorillas smacked a pair of two-out solo home runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 deadlock in earning the win.

UCO fell to 41-5 and finished 23-3 in winning the league title.  The Bronchos will be the No. 1 seed for the MIAA Postseason Tournament that starts Wednesday in Edmond and will face No. 8 seed Northeastern State in an 11 a.m. first-round game.

Other opening-round games will have No. 2 Missouri Western taking on Pittsburg State, No. 3 Washburn facing No. 6 Emporia State and No. 4 Central Missouri going against No. 5 Lindenwood.  The double-elimination tournament concludes with Saturday's finals.

"We left a lot of runs out there today," head coach Cody White said.  "We had several opportunities to get some separation and just didn't do enough to make it happen.

"We're happy to be the conference champions, but now it's time to turn our focus to the postseason and keep working toward those goals we still want to accomplish."

Bailey Thompson, JoBi Heath and Carli Jones had two hits apiece for UCO in the loss.

The Bronchos scored twice in their first at bat to jump on top quickly, though PSU answered back in the bottom half of the inning to tie it.

Hazel Puempel reached on an error to open the first and went to second on Thompson's bloop single before both advanced on Halley Randolph's sacrifice bunt.  Heath followed with a run-scoring single up the middle and Jones' RBI single through the left side made it 2-0.

The Gorillas knotted it at 2-all in their half of the inning and it stayed that way until the fifth, when the teams again traded runs.

Randolph led off the inning with her third home run of the season, this one a line-drive shot to left-center field.  Heath and Jones followed with consecutive singles to put two runners on with no outs, but UCO couldn't punch across another score.

PSU tied it again in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer of its own.

The Bronchos had prime scoring opportunity in the sixth and again failed to capitalize.  Casady Webb led off the frame with a double to left field and Brighton Gilbert followed with a single to left-center, but a strikeout and two fly outs ended the threat.

The Gorillas broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth with the two wind-aided homers to right field and UCO couldn't answer back in its final at bat.
