Bronchos Topple NSU In MIAA Opener

EDMOND (May 1) – Pitching ace Bailey McKittrick continued her mastery of Northeastern State to lead top-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 7-1 triumph in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Softball Championship Wednesday morning at Broncho Stadium.

McKittrick -- recognized as MIAA Pitcher of the Year before the contest started -- scattered four hits, walked just one and allowed one run in going the first six innings.  The freshman right-hander, who threw a five-inning no-hitter against the RiverHawks three weeks ago, improved to 22-2.

The regular-season league champion Bronchos moved to 42-5 on the season and will play Central Missouri in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday.  The Jennies downed Lindenwood 4-1, while Washburn edged Emporia State 2-1 and Missouri Western beat Pittsburg State 4-2 in other opening-round games.

"Bailey had another great game for us and we came through with some clutch hits," head coach Cody White said.  "Our defense was really good as well.  It's nice to get off to a good start, but there's still a long ways to go."

Allie Eicher and JoBi Heath had two hits apiece to lead Central's eight-hit attack, with the Bronchos scoring all seven of their runs in a three-inning stretch.

UCO broke a scoreless deadlock in the third with three runs to take control.

Halley Randolph got the Bronchos started in that inning with a one-out walk, Heath followed with a single to left field and Lexy Dobson pushed across the game's first run with a two-out double down the right field line.  Eicher then made it 3-0 with a single through the right side.

NSU got its only run of the game in the top of the fourth with a two-out solo home run, but the Bronchos quickly answered back in their half of the inning.

Brighton Gilbert led off with a bunt single, Hazel Puempel ripped a base hit up the middle and both advanced on Bailey Thompson's sacrifice bunt.  Gilbert raced home on Randolph's groundout to second base, then Heath had an RBI bloop single to left-center to push the lead to 5-1.

UCO ended the scoring in the fifth.

Casady Webb and Gilbert drew consecutive one-out walks to get things going and both moved up a base on a wild pitch.  Puempel's sacrifice fly plated Webb and Gilbert scored on Thompson's single to center field.

The Bronchos had no errors in the game, with Webb at second base, Heath at third base and Puempel in right field all coming up with stellar defensive plays.
