UCO Beats Washburn In Series Opener

EDMOND – Kyle Crowl popped a deep fly ball to right field and celebrated with an emphatic bat flip, knowing his out would be a sacrifice fly and would score the game-winning, walk off run in a 2-1 victory for the University of Central Oklahoma baseball team over Washburn in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association at Wendell Simmons Field Friday night.

Dru Barrier darted home after the Washburn right fielder made the catch. The team then darted to an awaiting Crowl in front of the WU bench off first base.

Central Oklahoma is now 29-15 on the season and 18-10 in the MIAA. The Bronchos officially clinched a berth in next month's MIAA Tournament with the win.

"We played a really good game of baseball tonight," UCO head coach John Martin said. "It was a great defensive game, we hit the ball well even though we didn't get a bunch of hits, and then we came through in the ninth when it mattered most. That was a good baseball game."

Central Oklahoma scattered seven hits Friday night. Crowl had two of them and added two RBIs on a 2-for-4 night. Philip Scott was also 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run.

Barrier led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to the WU first baseman. TJ Black followed with a hit by pitch, and Scott followed that reaching on an error by the Washburn pitcher while laying down a sacrifice bunt. That loaded the bases with no outs in a 1-1 game as Crowl stepped to the plate.

He fouled off the first pitch with an aggressive swing before watching two balls go by. The fourth pitch he popped up to deep right field.

The ninth inning was most of the Broncho offense Friday night.

Crowl scored Scott with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Scott led off with a double to right field on a play that the WU defenseman lost a routine fly ball and let it bounce past him. Crowl knocked a 1-1 pitch to left field that easily scored Scott to tie the game 1-1.

Dylan Hall got the start for the Bronchos. He threw seven innings, allowed six hits and one run while striking out nine on the night. Landon Bond threw 1/3 of an inning in the top of the eighth, allowing one hit. Junior Obeso, who earned the win and is now 4-1 on the season, threw 1 2/3 innings, allowed one hit, and struck out two.

Central Oklahoma and Washburn are just getting started this weekend. The three-game MIAA series continues Saturday at 3 p.m.
