Bronchos Top ECU

ADA, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team overcame a slow start Tuesday to beat East Central 8-3 in non-conference play. The Bronchos improved to 28-15 with the win.

"We did a much better job today working with our baserunners," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We strung a few hits together. It was good to see the team do that on the second day of a back-to-back on the road."

Brent Stephens got the start for the Bronchos, his first of the season and first in Bronze & Blue. He only threw 1 1/3, allowed three runs on two hits and issued five walks.

But the Broncho bats had his back. UCO trailed 3-0 after one inning, but used a sacrifice fly in the second to score one run, and a pair of RBI doubles in the third to take a 4-3 lead over ECU.

Landon Bond replaced Stephens and was solid out of the bullpen. In his 25th appearance of the season, Bond threw 5 2/3 innings, struck out six, and only surrendered one hit and one walk without allowing a run.

Joe Mondragon scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning. He led off with a walk, moved to second on a Brice West single, and third on a Carson Green walk that loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Dru Barrier then knocked a deep fly ball to left field for the second out, allowing Mondragon to score and make it 3-1, ECU.

In the third inning, Kyle Crowl popped a one-out single to left center, then Paul Kropf drew a walk. Mondgragon followed with a double to right center to score Crowl and make it 3-2. After a pitching change, Taylor Avila then doubled down the left field line to score Kropf and Mondragon and put UCO ahead for good, 4-3.

The game stayed that way for three innings. But the Bronchos had more in the sixth.

Green led off with a walk and Barrier followed with the same. Trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt, Black then reached on an error by the ECU third baseman on the play and Green scored to make it 5-3. Philip Scott then knocked an RBI single up the middle to score Barrier and Scott and give UCO a 7-3 lead.

Black scored again in the seventh when Crowl reached on an error by the same ESU third baseman. That made it 8-3, Bronchos.

Josh Rutland replaced Bond in the bottom of the eighth. He struck out one in his first inning of work and two more in the ninth to close out the game.

Black led UCO with a 2-for-4 day. He scored twice and had one RBI. Scott was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, as was Avila.

Central Oklahoma will return to conference play this weekend. The Bronchos host Washburn Friday at 6 p.m. in the first of three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games at Wendell Simmons Field.
