UCO Downed At OBU

SHAWNEE, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped an 8-1 decision at Oklahoma Baptist Monday night in a non-conference matchup at Bison Field.

Central Oklahoma is now 27-15 following the loss.

"We left too many on base today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We had plenty of chances but we didn't do anything about it. We need to change that, that's the difference in winning and losing."

UCO stranded 10 runners Monday. It's only the seventh time this season UCO left double digit baserunners on the bags.

Central Oklahoma got an early 1-0 lead in the second inning Monday. Kyle Crowl led off the top of the second with a single to center field. He moved up to second on a Paul Kropf groundout, and over to third a Taylor Avila single to left field. Crowl scored after Dru Barrier struck out and Avila was attempting to steal second base, the OBU catcher made a throwing error down to second base. Crowl trotted home for the score.

The lead didn't last long though. OBU knocked a first-pitch solo home run in the bottom of the second to tie the game, 1-1. A single followed by a double in the gap made it 2-1, OBU. Then a sacrifice fly gave the Bison a 3-1 lead after two innings.

The game stayed that way for three more innings. Ty Medina started for UCO Monday. He allowed eight hits, but was solid with the exception of the second inning. He had four strikeouts through 4 2/3 innings. He hit a batter in the fifth with one out, then that baserunner moved all the way to third on a failed pickoff by Medina. He scored on a single to make it 4-1, OBU.

Spencer Van Scoyoc replaced Medina in the fifth. He got out of that inning with ease, striking out the only batter he faced. It wouldn't be as easy in the sixth. Van Scoyoc walked the first two batters before getting his second strikeout of the night. But then a two-RBI double to left center made it 6-1, OBU. During the next at bat, a wild pitch scored another Bison run to make it 7-1.  Van Scoyoc got all four of his outs via a strikeout.

UCO threatened in the top of the seventh. Barrier drilled a one-out double down the right field line, Brock Schaffer was hit by a pitch, and Ryan Harrel drew a walk. But after an OBU pitching change, TJ Black struck out and then Philip Scott flied out to deep center field, only feet short of a grand slam, and the Bison found their way out of the inning still ahead 7-1.

A two-out double in the top of the eighth inning from Kropf gave UCO a little more life late in the game. Avila followed with a walk, but a Barrier ground out ended the inning and yet another chance for the Bronchos.

OBU added one more off Junior Obeso in the bottom of the eighth to go up 8-1.

Central scattered seven hits Monday. Black led the way with a 2-for-5 day at the plate. Kropf and Barrier both had one hit on the day and both were doubles, UCO's only two extra-base hits on the night.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled for a quick turnaround on the road. The Bronchos will visit East Central in Ada, Okla. Tuesday at 3 p.m.
