Jones Slam Sparks UCO Past Tigers

HAYS, Kan. (April 2) – Carli Jones cranked an early-game grand slam to put Central Oklahoma in control and Bailey McKittrick had another fine outing in the pitching circle to guide the No. 2-ranked Bronchos to a 7-1 first-game rout of Fort Hays State Tuesday afternoon.

Jones' third-inning blast staked UCO to a 4-0 lead and that was more than enough cushion for McKittrick.  The freshman right-hander scattered five hits while walking just one and striking out seven in her seventh complete-game outing of the season, improving to 15-0.

The Bronchos moved to 29-2 and 11-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play heading into the second game of the doubleheader.

UCO finished with 12 hits, led by Bailey Thompson's 3-for-5 performance.  Jones, JoBi Heath and Lexy Dobson added two hits apiece for the Bronchos, who also benefitted from seven walks.

Central threatened in the second inning when Jones' single and walks to Heath and Casady Webb loaded the bases with one out, but FHSU escaped danger with a double play.

The Bronchos didn't squander their next bases-loaded opportunity, which came the very next inning.

Thompson ignited a two-out rally with her second bunt single of the game, then consecutive walks to Halley Randolph and Heath put a Broncho on every bag.  And one pitch later the bases were empty again.

Jones drove the first pitch she saw over the right field fence for her fourth home run of the season – and first grand slam in a 21-homer career – to give UCO a 4-0 lead.

The advantage grew to 6-0 in the fourth.

Haley Pomplun led off that inning with a single up the middle and Brighton Gilbert followed with a sacrifice bunt before Hazel Puempel drew a walk.  Thompson then ripped an RBI single up the middle and Heath came through an out later with a run-scoring base hit through the left side.

Heath had another two-out RBI – her 18th of the season – in the sixth when she followed Randolph's double to left-center field with a single to left to score pinch-runner McKenzie Carney to push the lead to 7-0.

FHSU scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
