Fort Hays State Tops Bronchos In Extra Innings

HAYS, Kan. (April 2) – No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma suffered its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics loss of the season Tuesday afternoon when Fort Hays State handed the Bronchos a 7-6 extra-inning setback in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Tigers ended a 6-all stalemate in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-out run-scoring bloop single.  It was just the third loss of the season for UCO, which fell to 29-3 overall and 11-1 in the league.

"That was a tough one, but we just didn't play well enough to win the game," said head coach Cody White, whose team took the opener 7-1.  "We weren't very good offensively and they hit us pretty good.  We just need to put it behind us and get ready for this weekend."

The Bronchos wrap-up an 11-game road-swing Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Northeastern State.

Central managed just seven hits in the game, getting two each from Hazel Puempel and Lexy Dobson, while the Tigers had 16 hits against three UCO pitchers.

FHSU broke on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bronchos answered back with three in the top of the second.

Carli Jones started that inning with a walk, Dobson followed with a single to left field and both advanced on a wild pitch.  Jones came home on another wild pitch, Brighton Gilbert's groundout scored a run and Puempel's RBI double to left-center put the Bronchos ahead 3-2.

The Tigers tied it in their half of the inning before UCO went back on top with three more runs in the third.

JoBi Heath led off with a walk and Jones quickly put the Bronchos in the lead with a line shot over the right field wall for her second home run of the day.  Dobson then singled and ended up scoring on an error to give UCO a 6-3 lead.

FHSU made it 6-5 in the bottom of the third and then tied it again at 6-all in the fourth before finally breaking the deadlock in the eighth.
