UCO Tops Hornets In Opener

EDMOND (April 19) – Halley Randolph's three-run double keyed a five-run uprising that put Central Oklahoma in the lead and Bailey McKittrick overcame a slow start to rack up another pitching win as the No. 2-ranked Bronchos subdued Emporia State 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The Hornets led 2-0 after one inning, but UCO answered back in emphatic fashion in the second with a five-run outburst to take control en route to its seventh straight win.

ESU had three hits in scoring its two first-inning runs, but McKittrick dominated the rest of the way in allowing only two hits the last six innings.  The rookie right-hander struck out five and walked just one in improving to 19-1.

The Bronchos moved to 36-3 on the season and 18-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play going into the nightcap.

Hazel Puempel led UCO's 10-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Bailey Thompson added two hits.

Emporia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and the Bronchos failed to score in their initial at bat despite getting consecutive lead-off base hits from Puempel and Thompson, but UCO made up for that in the second.

Lexy Dobson started the inning with a walk, Casady Webb reached on a one-out fielder's choice and Brighton Gilbert singled through the right side to load the bases before Puempel's blooper dropped in short right field to score the first run.

Thompson followed with a line-drive single to left field to tie the game and then Randolph roped a double to the right-center field gap to clear the bases and put Central on top 5-2.

It stayed that way until the fourth when JoBi Heath blasted a towering two-out, two-strike solo home run to right field.  It was the team-leading eighth homer of the season for the senior slugger.

Thompson continued her stellar defensive play in center field with a highlight-reel catch in the third, sprinting forward and then making a diving grab of a sinking line drive.
