Bronchos Top Emporia To Complete Sweep

EDMOND (April 19) – Lexy Dobson had three hits and JoBi Heath belted a pair of home runs to lead a 12-hit assault that carried No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma to 10-4 second-game triumph over Emporia State Friday afternoon.

The Bronchos won for the eighth straight time in finishing off the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader sweep and staying perfect (20-0) at home this season.  UCO improved to 37-3 overall and 19-1 in the league.

"We played pretty well today," head coach Cody White said.  "We did some good things offensively, our pitching was solid and I thought our defense was good with a couple of exceptions.  Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and play even better."

Dobson's 3-for-4 outing led the offense, while Heath and Brighton Gilbert added two hits each.

Sydney McLeod picked up the pitching win in improving to 16-2, scattering seven hits in going the first six innings while striking out four and walking none.  Lauren Gibson came on to throw a perfect seventh in closing out the game.

Emporia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second only to see the Bronchos answer back with three runs in their half of the inning.

Heath led things off with her first homer of the game, this one a long fly ball to right field that carried out of the stadium.  Carli Jones followed with a double down the left field line and scored on Dobson's single up the middle and Gilbert later added an RBI single through the right side to make it 3-1.

The Hornets got a run back in the third, but again UCO countered in its next at bat as Heath led off with a line-drive shot off the scoreboard in left-center field for her team-high 10th homer of the season and third of the day.

Central gained some breathing room in the fourth with a trio of runs to push the advantage to 7-2.

Gilbert got things started with a one-out bunt single, Hazel Puempel followed with a double down the left field line and Bailey Thompson plated them both with a single to right field.  Thompson went to third on an error on her hit and then raced home on Halley Randolph's perfectly placed squeeze bunt.

The cushion grew to 9-2 in the fifth when Jones led off with a walk, Dobson reached on an infield hit and both advanced on a groundout before Casady Webb delivered a two-run single up the middle.

The Hornets got a pair of runs back in the top of the sixth to pull within 9-4 and UCO scored on unearned run in its half of the inning to make it 10-4.

Central wraps up the regular season home schedule Saturday with a noon twinbill against defending conference champion Washburn.  Former four-time All-American Gladys Griffin will have her jersey retired in a ceremony before play starts and the four seniors on this year's team – Heath, Jones, Thompson and Webb – will be recognized between games.
