Central Oklahoma Wins Series Opener With Fort Hays State

EDMOND – Dylan Hall threw a school record 14 strikeouts in a complete game Thursday night to propel the University of Central Oklahoma baseball team to a 4-1 win over Fort Hays State in the first of three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games at Wendell Simmons Field this weekend.

Central Oklahoma improved to 25-14 with the win and is now 15-10 in the MIAA.

"Dylan was great tonight," UCO head coach John Martin said. "It's fun to watch a kid have a night like this, when he can throw nine innings and hardly give up anything."

Thursday was Hall's first complete game of the season. His longest outing had been 7 2/3 earlier this season. The Stafford, Va. native and junior righty went the distance on 106 pitches.

Hall allowed a double to the first batter he faced before retiring the next 19 batters. He gave up his only walk of the game in top of the seventh. He allowed a single in that inning as well, and then a solo home run in the top of the eighth.

Hall also recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts, tying Jesse McGough for the most in one game in UCO history. He has two games with 11 strikeouts and two games with 10 strikeouts to go along with Thursday's gem. Hall's 95 strikeouts this season ranks him third on Central Oklahoma's all-time list.

But Hall wasn't the only pitcher to put on a show in Edmond Thursday night. Fort Hays State starter Ethan Booe threw 6 2/3 innings before allowing a hit.

Central Oklahoma struggled at the plate through the first six innings, having only two base runners. Brice West reached on an error in the third, and Joe Mondragon drew a walk in the sixth. Neither amounted to anything though for the Bronchos.

In the seventh though, with two outs, TK McWhertor connected on a single up the middle to break up the no-hitter. That opened the flood gates.

Taylor Avila followed with a double to right center, then Brock Ruminer traded places with Avila, recording a two-RBI double to the same spot.

In the eighth, Mondragon led off with a double, TJ Black reached on an error by the pitcher, and Philip Scott singled on a bunt himself. Dru Barrier, who pinch ran for Mondragon, scored on Black's at bat. Black scored on Scott's single.

That made it 4-1, UCO, which was more than enough for Hall.

Central Oklahoma and Fort Hays State will reconvene at Wendell Simmons Field Friday at 3 p.m. Game 3 in the series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
