Bronchos Outlast FHSU

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team won its second game in as many days over Fort Hays State Friday afternoon, beating the Tigers 7-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 26-14 with the win and is now 16-10 in the MIAA. Game 3 is Saturday at 1 p.m.

Gabe Littlejim picked up a win in his first outing in nearly a month, striking out six in six innings of work. He allowed three runs and three hits - all in the first inning, and two walks.

"I'm glad the team responded after being down early and showed they had Gabe's back," UCO head coach John Martin said. "Gabe did a good job today once he settled in and helped us win another series."

Littejim, who hadn't pitched since March 23, allowed a leadoff double and a pair of singles as FHSU went up to 3-0. He settled in after that. Littlejim retired the side in order in every other inning he threw, not allowing a hit. He only issued two walks, but a pair of double plays helped UCO get out of trouble.

Landon Bond came on in relief of Littlejim and struck out five over the next two innings. Josh Rutland struck out one in his one inning of work to close out the Broncho victory.

Central Oklahoma scored one run in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth as hit inched back into and ahead in the game. The Bronchos added three in the eighth for insurance.

Kyle Crowl led the Broncho effort at the plate. He went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and  a double. He had two RBIs and scored three runs on the day. TJ Black, Brock Ruminer, and Carson Green all had two hits on the day as well.

Crowl led off the bottom of the second with a double to right center. Ruminer followed with a bunt single. After Taylor Avila struck out, Green scored Crowl with an RBI groundout to make it 3-1.

Philip Scott knocked a one-out double in the bottom of the third and later scored on a Paul Kropf single through the right side to make it 3-2. Black led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple. He scored on a TK McWhertor groundout to tie the game, 3-3. After Crowl led off the sixth with a single, he advanced to second on a groundout from Ruminer, then third on a wild pitch. Avila scored Crowl for the go-ahead run on a groundout to the FHSU shortstop.

In the eighth, Kropf led off with a walk before Crowl smacked the first pitch he saw over the fence in the right center. Green then stepped up, drew a 2-2 count, and swung on the next pitch, knocking his first career homer over the fence in right to make it 7-3.

Central Oklahoma will meet FHSU one more time. Game 3 is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
