Central Oklahoma Wins At Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Southeastern Oklahoma State 9-3 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Metheny Field.

The Bronchos improved to 24-14 with the win, their fourth in five games, and took the season series with SOSU 2-1. UCO beat Southeastern 10-0 on Feb. 1 before the Savage Storm won 9-8 on March 19.

"We had a good all-around performance today and that's what we'd like to see on a more consistent basis," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We were steady at the plate and did a good job moving baserunners around. We got a good performance from out pitching staff. We need to make this the consistent play moving forward."

Central's win will officially go down as a comeback. Southeastern drew an early 1-0 lead in the game, though the Bronchos were quick to respond. UCO scored five runs on just one hit in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead.

TK McWhertor led off with a single, then Taylor Avila got hit by a pitch. Laying down a sacrifice bunt, Brock Ruminer reached on an error by the SOSU pitcher as McWhertor scored to tie the game, 1-1.

After Brock Schaffer got hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dru Barrier drew a walk that scored Avila and gave Central a 2-1 lead. Ruminer scored on a wild pitch moments later, then back-to-back sacrifice flies by Philip Scott and  Kyle Crowl scored Schaffer and Barrier and gave the Bronchos a 5-1 lead.

McWhertor led off for the second inning in a row in the top of the fifth and was hit by a pitch to reach base for the second inning in a row. After Avila popped up to short, Ruminer stepped up and knocked a two-run home run over the fence in right field to make it 7-1, UCO. It was Ruminer's second career home run, both have come this season.

Paul Kropf led off the top of the seventh inning with a single and McWhertor, up second, was again hit by a pitch to put two on with nobody out. Avila then reached on an error by the SOSU first baseman to load the bases, and Ruminer followed by reaching on a fielder's choice. Kropf scored on Ruminer's knock to make it 8-1, UCO. McWhertor scored on the next play as Schaffer hit into a double play.

Ty Medina got the start for the Bronchos Tuesday. After walking the first batter of the game, the junior from Lawton, Okla. settled in. He went on to strike out eight of the 20 batters faced over the next five innings. Medina allowed three hits and walked two, allowing one run in the outing.

Spencer Van Scoyoc threw one inning of relief work, striking out two. Brent Stephens also struck out two batters in one inning out of the bullpen. SOSU got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth when Junior Obeso came on to pitch for Stephens. He allowed three straight singles, the second one a two-RBI knock.

Landon Bond replaced Obeso after that and struck out the next two batters and helped UCO get out of the inning up, 9-3. Josh Rutland came on to throw the ninth for the Bronchos. He walked the leadoff hitter, but then got a pop-fly to center and a strikeout, before another pop-out, to close the door on another UCO victory.

Crowl, Kropf, and Ruminer gathered two hits apiece to lead the UCO offensive effort. Crowl went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Kropf went 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Ruminer went 2-for-4 with the home run, three RBIs, and two runs. McWhertor and Avila also added hits for the Bronchos.

Central now moves back to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play later this week. The Bronchos play host to Fort Hays State for a three-game series beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. UCO will also play
FHSU on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
