UCO Routs Bearcats To Complete Sweep

EDMOND (April 12) – Lexy Dobson capped a three-hit outing with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth inning that gave Central Oklahoma an 8-0 run-rule rout of Southwest Baptist in the second game of a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The Bronchos finished off a doubleheader sweep with the easy win, improving to 35-3 on the season and 17-1 in the league.  UCO allowed just two runs in 27 innings in beating SBU and Central Missouri in four games over two days.

"We really didn't play all that well today, especially offensively, but we got the job done," head coach Cody White said.  "Our pitching was solid in both games and it was good to get two conference wins today."

Sydney McLeod picked up the pitching win for the Bronchos, giving up just two hits in going the first five innings.  The junior left-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out two in improving to 15-2 before Lauren Gibson came on to throw a one-hit sixth inning.

Dobson's 3-for-4 performance led an 11-hit attack after UCO managed just six hits in a 6-1 first-game victory.  Carli Jones and Bailey Thompson added two hits each.

The Bronchos took control in the top in the second behind a four-run, four-hit attack.

Jones got the inning started with a first-pitch single up the middle, Dobson followed with a base hit to left field and Jones scored the game's first run when SBU threw the ball away on Casady Webb's sacrifice bunt.

Allie Eicher then lined a hard shot off the pitcher for a single that plated Dobson to make it 2-0.  Brighton Gilbert -- who made several fine defensive plays from her shortstop spot during the game -- had a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, with Hazel Puempel's sacrifice fly and Thompson's single to right field driving in the final two runs.

UCO upped the lead to 5-0 in the third when Jones reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on Dobson's single to left field and scored on Webb's hard base hit up the middle.

Jones was in the middle of the action again in the fourth as the Bronchos pushed their advantage to 7-0.

Puempel led off with a walk, but was out at second on a force that allowed Thompson to reach base.  Thompson quickly stole second and JoBi Heath drew a two-out walk before both advanced on a wild pitch to set up Jones, who drilled a two-run double down the left field line.

Central ended the game in the sixth.

Pinch-hitter Tori Huslig punched a one-out single through the left side, Heath followed with a single to right field and Huslig advanced to third on Jones' long fly out before scoring the game-ending run on Dobson's bloop base hit to right.

UCO takes a break from its MIAA schedule Tuesday, going to Lawton to take on former Lone Star Conference rival Cameron fro a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
