McLeod, Bronchos Shut Down Central Missouri

EDMOND (April 11) – Sydney McLeod overcame a sluggish start with a dominating finish to guide Central Oklahoma to a 6-0 shutout of Central Missouri in the second game of a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader Thursday evening.

The junior left-hander allowed two hits and walked two in the first two innings -- escaping a bases-loaded jam in the second on a superb play by shortstop Brighton Gilbert – before overwhelming the Jennies the rest of the way in finishing off a complete-game three-hitter.

McLeod retired 15 of the last 16 batters she faced in notching her third shutout of the season.  She struck out five and needed just 85 pitches in improving to 14-2.

The No. 2-ranked Bronchos jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead and finished with 11 hits in completing the doubleheader sweep.  UCO improved to 33-3 overall and 15-1 in the league with its 16th straight home win.

"Sydney did a great job for us," head coach Cody White said.  "She struggled a little at the start, but then settled down and really took over the game.  We played a lot better than in the first game and came out with two big wins over a good team."

Lexy Dobson led the offense with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate, while Hazel Puempel and JoBi Heath both had two hits.

UCO jumped out top early, breaking loose for three runs on four hits in its first at bat of the game.

Puempel led off with a double to right-center field and Bailey Thompson followed with a triple down the right field line to get the Bronchos on the scoreboard.  Heath reached on a one-out single up the middle, Dobson came through with a two-out RBI single to left field and then Allie Eicher drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0.

Central Missouri appeared on the verge of cutting into that lead in the second after loading the bases with one out, but Gilbert ended the threat when she speared a hard-hit grounder up the middle and stepped on second before gunning down the batter by a step to complete an inning-ending double play.

The Bronchos padded their advantage in the third.  Dobson hit a one-out single to right field and Eicher – who returned to the lineup Thursday for the first time since having her appendix removed on March 24 – cranked a two-out RBI double off the center field wall to make it 4-0.

Puempel opened the fifth inning with a single up the middle and went to second on Thompson's sacrifice bunt before scoring on an error following a groundout to push the lead to 5-0.

UCO's final run came in the sixth when Halley Randolph led off with a single to left, pinch-runner Haley Pomplun went to second on a wild pitch and then scored on Carli Jones' base hit to right-center.

The Bronchos are back in action Friday, hosting Southwest Baptist for a 1 p.m.
