UCO Tops Missouri Western

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma softball team beat Missouri Western 7-3 in the first of two Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games at Broncho Stadium Friday afternoon.

The win, the 15th consecutive for the eighth-ranked Bronchos, improved Central to 19-1 on the season.

"We had to find a find a way today," UCO head softball coach Cody White said. "We played well enough to win and that's all that matters."

Central Oklahoma scattered seven hits on the day, but left eight runners on base. Still, it was more than enough for the Bronchos.

Sydney McLeod threw a complete game in getting her eighth win of the season. The junior lefty is now 8-1 on the season. She struck out two in the outing, allowing six hits, three runs - two of those earned - and one walk.

Hazel Puempel went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. JoBi Heath also went 2-for-4 on the day and hit two doubles, the 58th and 59th of her career. Heath had one RBI and also scored a run on the day.

UCO scored six of its seven runs in the bottom of the third inning after going down 3-0. Heath's first double of the game scored Bailey Thompson. Casady Webb drew a bases loaded hit by pitch to score Halley Randolph and make it 3-2. Brighton Gilbert then drew a walk on the next at bat to score that score Heath to tie the game.

Then Puempel cleared the bases with a double smashed to left field. That gave UCO a 6-3 lead in the game.

Puempel scored Gilbert in the fifth after Gilbert singled, then stole second. She scored on Puempel's single to right field.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western played Game 2 following the first meeting.
