Bronchos Win 16th Straight With Sweep of Missouri Western

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma swept Missouri Western Friday afternoon following a 6-2 win in the second game of a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader at Broncho Stadium.

UCO improved to 20-1 on the season with the win, its 16th consecutive victory. The Bronchos also beat MWSU 7-3 earlier Friday.

"We really had to battle today and I'm proud of this team for doing that," UCO head softball coach Cody White said. "This was an intense game and it took us just a little bit to get going with the bats but we found a way and got the win. It's always good to win and especially to win the MIAA games."

Central Oklahoma is 4-0 in the MIAA after sweeping both Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western at home this week.

Bailey McKittrick picked up the win for the Bronchos in the circle. The freshman threw a complete game, allowing just three hits and two runs, only one earned, and four walks. She struck out two and is now 9-0 on the season.

Missouri Western struck first Friday. The Griffons led off with a walk and later scored on an error by UCO to go up 1-0.

UCO responded though, plating one run itself in the bottom of the first. Hazel Puempel led off with a walk and scored on a JoBi Heath double to tie the game. The double by Heath was her 60th career double, second-most in school history. It was also her 179th RBI, which put her in third place on UCO's all-time list.

MWSU went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning and it stayed that way until the fifth.

Brighton Gilbert smacked an RBI single to center field that scored Lexy Dobson to tie the game, 2-2. Puempel then drew a two-out walk that scored Allie Eicher and gave UCO the lead, which it did not relinquish.

In the bottom of the sixth, Dobson hit an RBI single to score Heath. Then, Eicher smoked a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right field to score herself and Dobson and make it 6-2, UCO.

Eicher finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gilbert was also 3-for-4 with one RBI. Heath finished the day 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Dobson was also 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Central Oklahoma will hit the road for conference play next week, and for the next month overall. UCO will play at Lindenwood and Lincoln next weekend in MIAA action. The Bronchos will then go to St. Joseph, Mo. for the Hy-Vee Classic before road trips to Kearney, Neb., Hays, Kan., and Tahlequah, Okla. UCO plays at home again April 12 against Southwest Baptist.
