Bronchos Blast Bearcats In MIAA Opener

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma softball team blasted Northwest Missouri 17-3 in a five-inning run-rule Thursday afternoon at Broncho Stadium in the first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game for both schools.

UCO, ranked No. 8 in the nation, is now 17-1 on the season and improved its win streak to 13 games thanks to a highly successful day at the plate.

Casady Webb went 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs. Hazel Puempel also went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs. JoBi Heath added a fifth homer for the Bronchos as she went 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Puempel, Bailey Thompson and Halley Randolph all had doubles in the game too.

"We got after them at the plate and that's the kind of aggressive approach we need to get out there and have," UCO head softball coach Cody White said. "It was good to see."

Central Oklahoma scored in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Thompson that scored Puempel to make it 1-0.

The Bronchos plated four in the bottom of the second, an RBI single from Webb that scored Lexy Dobson, and a three-run home run by Puempel to make it 5-0.

Then in the third, the Bronchos did more than break it open.

UCO scored 12 runs on nine hits in the inning. Puempel hit her second homer and Webb hit both of hers. UCO sent 15 batters to the plate in the frame.

Sydney McLeod got the win for the Bronchos Thursday. She threw three innings and struck out three to improve to 8-1 on the season. She allowed four hits, but no walks or runs.

Lauren Gibson added two innings of relief work, allowing four hits, three runs, and one walk to finish off the game.

Five home runs in the game for the Bronchos is tied for second-most in school history for one game and 16 RBIs is tied for fifth. Puempel and Webb also joined a long list of players to hit two homers in one game. Webb's six RBIs is the fifth-most in school history for one game.

Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri will play Game 2 of the doubleheader Thursday afternoon. The Bronchos host Missouri Western Friday at 1 & 3 p.m. as MIAA play continues in Edmond.
