No. 8 UCO Completes Sweep of Northwest

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma softball team made it a clean sweep of Northwest Missouri, dispatching the Bearcats 7-1 in the second of two Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games at Broncho Stadium Thursday afternoon.

Central Oklahoma pushed its win streak to 14 games as the eighth-rated Bronchos improved to 18-1 on the season. UCO is now 2-0 in league play following the sweep.

"We didn't play as well offensively in the second game today, but we'll take a win every day of the week," UCO head softball coach Cody White said. "We just had two really good games pitching and the team rallied around that and gave them a lot of run support. It was a good day all around for us."

Freshman Bailey McKittrick, who was named MIAA Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday, went the distance Thursday to improve to 8-0 on the season. She struck one, allowing six hits and one run in the win.

UCO scattered 10 hits in the game after belting 15 of them in Game 1. Sophomore duo Lexy Dobson and Allie Eicher both had two hits to lead the way. Dobson had two RBIs in the game. Both hit doubles. Hazel Puempel also had two RBIs on the day as she went 1-for-4 with a single.

UCO beat Northwest Missouri 17-3 in the first game Thursday, and led 17-0 in the final inning. In Game 2, NWMSU had the early lead, going ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning. The Bearcats got a leadoff double and scored on a second double two batters later to go ahead.

Despite a slow start at the plate, going three-up, three-down in the first, UCO responded with a pair of runs in the second to take the lead.

Carli Jones earned a one-out walk and moved up to second on a Dobson single. Eicher scored Jones with her double next, and Casady Webb scored Dobson with a sacrifice fly to give UCO the 2-1 lead.

The Bronchos put two more on the board in the fourth inning. Jones drew another walk, this one as the leadoff hitter in the inning, then Eicher and Webb both singled behind her. Puempel then knocked a two-RBI single to center that scored both Jones and Eicher to make it 4-1, UCO.

Jones drew her third walk in as many at bats in the fifth inning after Halley Randolph led off with a single. McKenzie Carney, who pinch ran for Randolph, and Jones, both scored on Dobson's two-RBI double to left field. That made it 6-1, Bronchos. Brighton Gilbert smacked an RBI single to score Eicher, who also walked in the inning, to make it 7-1, UCO.

Central Oklahoma is now 18-1 on the season. The Bronchos are averaging 8.5 runs per game through 19 games played in 2019. UCO will host Missouri Western Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in MIAA play.
