Bronchos Top Bison

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Oklahoma Baptist 7-2 Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 10-5 on the season with the win, their fourth straight.

"We had a strong outing from the pitchers today, they really came through against a good OBU team," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Hats off to them for their hard work. We didn't do great at the plate, but we did enough, and then we really battled late to get the job done. It's a good win."

Central Oklahoma scattered seven hits on the day and each one came from a different player. The Bronchos used a big, five-run eighth inning to pull ahead for the win. UCO in the inning got five runs off of just three hits. The Bronchos drew five walks in the inning off three different OBU pitchers.

Junior Obeso got the win for the Bronchos and is now 1-1 on the season. The senior reliever came in to a 2-2 game in the top of the eighth inning with two outs. He threw just two pitches to get out of the inning and then struck out got three outs in the ninth with one strikeout to get the win.

Colton Croft got the start for the Bronchos and was solid. The redshirt freshman threw four innings of work, allowing four hits and two runs. He struck out four on the day.

Landon Bond came in in the top of the fifth and dominated OBU. He struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings of work. Bond did not allow a hit or a walk to 11 batters faced.

Tuesday is the ninth time in 15 games – and third straight – that Central Oklahoma has struck out at least 10 batters. The Bronchos fanned 13 Tuesday and have now struck out 163 in 15 games this season.

Brock Ruminer scored the first run of the game for the Bronchos in the bottom of the second inning. He was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second, and moved to third on a Brock Schaffer groundout. Ruminer scored on a second wild pitch moments later.

Brice West led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple and scored on Ruminer's infield single after that to tie the game, 2-2. OBU went up 2-0 in the top of the second thanks to a two-run home run off of Croft. The Bison didn't get another hit until the top of the ninth though.

UCO didn't get a hit either from the fourth to the eighth inning. Philip Scott changed that with a one-out single in the bottom of the eight. He scored as OBU walked in the game-winning run.

Paul Kropf was also walked in to make it 4-2, UCO. Kace Massner then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. TK McWhertor and T.J. Black then hit back-to-back RBI singles to score West and Ruminer and make it 7-2, UCO.

Dru Barrier also had a hit Tuesday. He led off the bottom of the first inning with a deep home run to right field. He swung at the first pitch he saw to hit his first career home run. However, after OBU challenged that Barrier didn't touch home plate, the umpire agreed and ruled Barrier out. He's credited with a triple, but no run, on the 350+ foot shot out of Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma will hit the road for the first time this season this weekend. The Bronchos are scheduled to play at Central Missouri this weekend, with games Friday, Saturday and Sunday. UCO returns home in two weeks to host Emporia State.
