Central Oklahoma Sweeps Pittsburg State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe Pittsburg State Sunday afternoon, beating the Gorillas 6-4 at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 16-9 on the season with the win and are now 9-6 in the MIAA. UCO also beat Pittsburg State 5-4 Friday and 3-0 Saturday.

"We have to give it up to our pitching staff and our defense for playing a solid weekend of baseball," UCO head coach John Martin said. "They gave their best effort and it shows. We were fortunate enough to do what we needed to on offense to get the wins and I think we're learning how to win close games and that's a good thing too."

Central Oklahoma this weekend held PSU scoreless in 25 of 27 innings played. Pittsburg scored all four of its runs Friday in the fourth inning, and after being shutout Saturday, scored all four of its runs Sunday in the third inning.

Brayden Nelson picked up his first win as a Broncho Sunday. The junior right-handed relief pitcher came on in the top of the fourth for starter Spencer Van Scoyoc and shut down Pitt State. He threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit and no walks. He struck out six batters along the way.

Van Scoyoc gave up four runs, just two earned, on two hits and a walk in three innings of work. He struck out four in his time on the mound.

Landon Bond came in to relieve Nelson and threw one inning of work, striking out two batters, and Junior Obeso picked up his first save of the season with a 2/3 inning outing.

TK McWhertor continued to lead the Bronchos at the plate. After going 2-for-3 Saturday with a double and a triple, the senior followed that up with a 3-for-3 day at the plate Sunday. He added another double, his sixth of the season, and a pair of singles. He had one RBI and also scored a run.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 2-0 lead for the third time in as many games this weekend. After Kyle Crowl and Philip Scott drew back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the first – they hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the first Saturday – a single through the left side of the infield by Paul Kropf put UCO on the board. Crowl scored easily from second on the play.

Kropf and Scott then executed a two-out double steal to second and third respectively, and the Pitt State catcher sailed the throw down to second base out into center field, allowing Scott to score easily and give UCO the 2-0 lead.

The Bronchos found themselves behind in the bottom of the third, but Kace Massner's leadoff double was the start of the quick comeback. Taylor Avila laid down a bunt, attempting to sacrifice himself to get Massner to third, but an errant throw by the PSU pitcher allowed Massner to score on the play and bring the Bronchos to within a run, 4-3.

Brice West later drew a two-out walk, and McWhertor singles right behind him. Then TJ Black popped up to left field. Only the PSU left fielder lost the ball. The routine play turned into a triple for Black, with West scoring the tying run and McWhertor scoring to put UCO ahead 5-4.

Avila drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and McWhertor's double down the left field line scored Avila to make it 6-4, UCO. The Broncho pitching staff would take care of the rest.

Central Oklahoma's sweep of Pittsburg State is the second MIAA sweep for the Bronchos this season. UCO also swept Northwest Missouri last month in Edmond.

The Bronchos will take Monday off before returning to the diamond. Central Oklahoma hosts Oklahoma Christian Tuesday at 6 p.m. before hitting the road. The Bronchos play 11 of the next 13 away from home.
