Bronchos Falter Against Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped an 8-5 decision to Oklahoma Christian Tuesday night in non-conference play at Wendell Simmons Field, ending a brief three-game win streak for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma is now 16-10 on the season.

"We did not come out ready to play and Oklahoma Christian did," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We fought for it late and still had plenty of chances, but didn't come through. If we hadn't put ourselves behind, then maybe things go differently tonight."

UCO trailed 2-0 in the top of the first inning, and by as much as 8-1 in the top of the sixth inning. But Central had the tying run on deck in the seventh and eighth innings before the too-little-too-late bug bit the Bronchos.

Ty Medina took the loss for UCO, his first of the season. The junior righty, who is typically a relief pitcher, threw two innings and allowed four runs on four hits and one walk. He did strike out two batters on the night.

UCO took the bullpen approach to Tuesday night's matchup. Landon Bond came in the third and threw just one inning. Brent Stephens then came out of the bullpen to throw 3 1/3 before Junior Obeso and Josh Rutland finished off OC.

The back half of Central's staff held OC at bay. Stephens allowed just one run on three hits. A double and a single in the sixth scored OC's eighth run of the game. Obeso threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out three batters and Rutland threw a scoreless ninth inning.

That effort gave the Bronchos a puncher's chance. UCO scored one run in each of the final four innings while attempting the comeback.

TK McWhertor smacked a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth to score Kyle Crowl and make the game 8-2, OC.

In the seventh, the Bronchos rallied. Brice West drew a pinch-hit walk before TJ Black singled with one out in the inning. Philip Scott then drew a walk and as Crowl earned a 2-0 count, OC changed pitchers. Crowl then earned two more balls to get the bases-loaded walk and RBI that scored West to make it 8-3. Unfortunately, the Bronchos would leave the bases loaded after that.

UCO would work for the same in the eighth. Taylor Avila drew a one-out walk before Brock Schaffer doubled down the right field line. West then reached on an error by the OC second baseman as Avila scored to make it 8-4. Black then drew another walk to load the bases again, however, Scott struck out on the next at bat and Crowl flied out to center field to end the inning.

McWhertor drilled a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to make it 8-5. Avila followed that up with an infield single, but Schaffer grounded out to end the game.

Central Oklahoma is 0-2 against Oklahoma Christian this season, having lost both games 8-5. The Bronchos will aim to salvage the season series next month when the teams meet for the final time in Oklahoma City.

Black, McWhertor, Avila, and Brock Ruminer led UCO at the plate Tuesday night. All four had two hits, accounting for eight of Central's 11 hits on the night. McWhertor went 2-for-5 with a home run and a double and two runs scored.

UCO will return to conference play this weekend as the Bronchos hit the road for just the second time all season. Central Oklahoma visits Missouri Western for a three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series beginning Friday in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Bronchos will be back at home next Tuesday to take on East Central in another non-conference home game at Wendell Simmons Field.
