Heath Homer Lifts UCO Over Eagles

OKLAHOMA  CITY (March 1) – JoBi Heath belted a two-run home run in the eighth inning to propel No. 15-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 7-5 come-from-from victory over Oklahoma Christian in the first game of Friday afternoon's doubleheader at Tom Heath Field.

The Bronchos overcame an early 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning only to see OC tie it in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Bailey Thompson got UCO's winning rally started in the eighth with a one-out single up the middle and Heath ripped a two-out drive over the left-center field fence  to break the deadlock.  It was the 32nd career homer for Heath, moving the senior star into fourth place on the school's all-time list.

Freshman Bailey McKittrick closed out UCO's 11th straight win in the pitching circle, giving up a one-out walk in the bottom of the eighth before retiring the final two batters to improve to 6-0.

Lexy Dobson went 3-for-4 to lead a 13-hit attack.  Allie Eicher, Carli Jones and Hazel Puempel had two hits apiece, while Halley Randolph finished with four RBI.

UCO took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Puempel led off with an infield single and alertly raced to second when OC failed to cover the bag on the play before advancing to third on a groundout and scoring on Randolph's groundout.

The Lady Eagles answered with a single run in their initial at bat to tie it and then went ahead 4-1 in the third on a three-run homer.

Central wasted a golden opportunity in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs on back-to-back hits by Brighton Gilbert and Puempel along with a walk to Thompson.  But the Bronchos only managed one run on Randolph's RBI groundout to make it 4-2 before consecutive strikeouts ended the threat.

UCO came right back in its next at bat to load the bases again and this time the Bronchos took advantage.

Dobson started the sixth with a single to center field, Eicher followed with a single up the middle and Gilbert drew a one-out walk before Dobson scored on Thompson's two-out fielder's choice as the speedy Gilbert beat the force-out try at second base that would have ended the inning.

Randolph then came through with a blooping hit that fell in shallow left-center field for a two-run single that gave UCO a 5-4 lead.

The Lady Eagles tied it at 5-all with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but Heath was up to the task in the eighth to lift the Bronchos to victory.
