UCO Battles Past Bearcats

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Northwest Missouri for the second time in one day Friday evening, winning the doubleheader nightcap 3-1. UCO also run-ruled its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe 10-0 earlier Friday.

Central Oklahoma improved to 8-5 on the season with the win and is now 2-3 in league play. Game 3 of the MIAA series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

"We had a lot of good things happen for us in the first game and some of that continued into the second game," UCO head coach John Martin said. "Our offense dipped a little bit, but we had enough. I'm really proud of our pitching staff for putting together two quality wins against a good team today."

Spencer Van Scoyoc made his second start of the season Friday evening. He finished with six shutout innings pitched and struck out six in the effort. The junior allowed just one hit on the day and walked only two batters. Van Scoyoc is 1-1 on the season.

Brayden Nelson, Junior Obeso and Josh Rutland all threw one inning of relief work Friday. Nelson struck out three batters in the seventh inning, and Obeso struck out two. Rutland did give up two hits and one run before earning the save.

Brock Ruminer got the scoring started for the Bronchos in Game 2. The junior outfielder from Edmond belted his first career home run on a 2-2 pitch and put the Bronchos up 1-0. Kyle Crowl followed that up with a solo homer of his own, the second of the day for the junior infielder, and the Bronchos led 2-0 after four innings.

In the fifth, TK McWhertor led off with a double to right field. He  moved over to third on a Ruminer sacrifice bunt, and then scored when TJ Black hit a sacrifice fly just deep enough to left field to give McWhertor time to make it 3-0 UCO.

UCO had six hits in the second game of the day Friday, after belting 13 of them in the first game. Crowl had two, a single and a home run. Brice West also had two hits in his four plate appearances.

Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri will finish up the three-game series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
