Puempel, Eicher Spark Bronchos

EDMOND (Feb. 9) – Hazel Puempel drove in four runs and Allie Eicher delivered a key three-run double to lead Central Oklahoma past Southern Nazarene 11-8 in the first game of the Raising Cane's Softball Festival Saturday.

The Bronchos overcame an early 4-1 deficit in claim the home-opening win and improve to 5-1.  Central takes on Cameron next, then returns Sunday to play Texas Woman's before finishing the three-day event with two games Monday.

Puempel and JoBi Heath had two hits apiece to lead UCO's nine-hit attack.

SNU smacked a three-run home run in the top of the first inning and added a run in the third to take a 4-1 lead before the Bronchos erupted for five runs in their half of the third.

Bailey Thompson was hit by pitch to lead off the inning and scored on Heath's double down the left field line, with Heath later scoring on an error.  Casady Webb added an RBI groundout and Puempel capped the uprising with a two-run double to right field.

UCO came back with another five-run volley in the fourth.

Heath started things with a lead-off infield single, Carli Jones followed with a single up the middle and Lexy Dobson walked to load the bases -- which Eicher promptly emptied by lashing a double to left-center field.  Puempel then followed a walk to Brighton Gilbert with a two-run triple to make it 11-4.

The Crimson Storm pushed across two runs in the fifth and added two more in their final at bat to get within 11-8 before Bailey McKittrick ended the game with a strikeout.  McKittrick went the final four innings to pick up the pitching win, improving to 3-0.
