UCO Hustles Past Drury

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma won 7-1 over Drury (Mo.) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 3-2 with the win. UCO will play again Saturday night, taking on Arkansas Tech in the second game of a three-game stand with the Wonder Boys of Russellville, Ark. this weekend.

"We fought hard today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We didn't hit the ball really well for almost half of the game, but we kept at it and started to get it going, and we were able to get the win."

Ty Medina picked up the win for the Bronchos for his solid effort out of the bullpen. Landon Bond had a really strong start, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing just one run on three hits. But UCO still trailed 1-0 when Medina took over.

UCO made its big rally in the bottom of the sixth, but it came in the fashion of drawing walks. After Taylor Avila struck out to end the inning, Brice West drew the first walk of the inning. He moved over on a Brock Schaffer single. The Bronchos then had the bases loaded after Kace Massner drew the second walk of the inning.

West scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1 while T.K. McWhertor stood in the box, and then McWhertor smacked a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 3-1 Bronchos.

Ryan Harrel and Philip Scott then drew the third and fourth walks of the inning to load the bases again. Kyle Crowl followed with a sacrifice-fly to score McWhertor and make it 4-1. Harrel would score after Avila drew a walk to make it 5-1.

The Bronchos got their other two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on one swing of the bat. Scott reached on a throwing error to lead off the inning and after Crowl grounded out, Paul Kropf smashed his second home run of the season over the fence in left field to make it 7-1, UCO.

Medina finished off the game to earn the win with 3 1/3 innings pitched. He didn't allow a hit or a run while striking out one of the 11 batters faced.

UCO will play Arkansas Tech Saturday night in the second of its three-game series before wrapping up with the third game on Sunday at noon.
