Bronchos Trounce Tech

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team made it a clean sweep for the day with a 10-1 win over Arkansas Tech Saturday night at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos also beat Drury Saturday afternoon.

UCO is now 4-2 on the young, 2019 season. The Bronchos also beat ATU Friday. The schools will play a final third game of the series on Sunday at noon.

"I was glad to see the team come out tonight and really work to get on bases and then work around," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did a good job of being patient and drawing walks and when we had runners in scoring position, we did something about it. And pitching was really good tonight too. Two games today and we gave up one run in each game. That's a good day on the mound."

Gabe Littlejim earned his first win as a UCO Broncho Saturday night. The Norman, Okla. native and Kansas State transfer threw seven innings of one-run baseball and struck out eight batters along the way. Littlejim (1-1), only allowed seven hits and one walk.

Brent Stephens came on in the eighth for the Bronchos in relief of Littlejim and allowed only two hits over two innings of shutout baseball. He struck out one batter in his two frames.

UCO got a big boost from Brice West Saturday, who went 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and a pair of doubles. West had an RBI double in the seventh inning and also scored a run.

Paul Kropf, who was just 1-for-4 at the plate, had a big day for the Bronchos thanks to one swing of the bat.

In the bottom of the third inning, Ryan Harrel and Kyle Crowl drew walks surrounding a Philip Scott single. Kropf stood in the batter's box and when he saw his pitch, drilled a line drive toward the 340-foot fence in left field. The ball hit the top of the fence and bounced over for a grand slam and UCO led 4-1.

The Bronchos scored three more times in the inning. West hit his first of two doubles in the third and Kace Massner scored him with an RBI single to make it 5-1.

Dru Barrier also scored. He walked after Massner then advanced to second and third on wild pitches. As Carson Green, who also walked, attempted to steal second, the Arkansas Tech catcher threw the ball into centerfield, allowing Barrier to score and make it 6-1. Green would score on yet another wild pitch to make it 7-1.

West made it 8-1 in the seventh with his double. Barrier made it 9-1 in the eighth when Scott hit an RBI single. Scott scored to make it 10-1 when Crowl doubled to left field for the game's final score.

UCO finished with 11 hits in the game Saturday, three of them were for extra bases.

The Bronchos will wrap up its three-game series with Arkansas Tech at 12 p.m. Sunday before a Monday off-day. UCO plays at Southeastern Oklahoma on Tuesday afternoon and will host Southwestern Oklahoma on Wednesday evening at Wendell Simmons Field.
