UCO Beats Arkansas Tech In Series Opener

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Arkansas Tech 7-6 Friday evening in the first of a three-game non-conference series at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos are now 2-2 on the young, 2019 season. Arkansas Tech is also 2-2 after the loss.

"We fought hard today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did a good job of coming out strong early and getting the lead and then did a good job of staying calm when Arkansas Tech made their rally. Today overall was a good performance by the guys."

Dylan Hall improved to 2-0 on the season. After winning Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Pitcher of the Week for his efforts in the season opener, Hall came out firing again. He struck out the first two ATU batters of the game in just six pitches.

After Hall easily got UCO up to the plate in the first inning, the Bronchos pounced.

Philip Scott knocked a one-out single in the bottom of the first and Paul Kropf singled up the middle right behind him. After Kyle Crowl hit a sacrifice fly to right field that moved both runners up a base, Brice West hit a two-RBI single to center field that put the Bronchos on the board and up 2-0.

Hall gave up four runs on the day, one in the top of the second as ATU responded, and two more in the top of the third that put the Wonder Boys ahead of UCO, 3-2.

In the bottom of the third though, Central responded.

Crowl led off with a walk and West singled to put runners on early. Taylor Avila then hit a sacrifice fly to move the runners over before Crit Williams smacked a double down the left field line to score both runners and give UCO the lead back, 4-3. Ryan Harrel also singled in the inning to score Williams and make if 5-3, Bronchos.

Carson Green earned an RBI on a groundout in the bottom of the seventh, and Harrel followed that with an RBI single up the middle that scored Avila and make it 7-4, UCO. Arkansas Tech added a two-run home run in the eighth to make it 7-6.

Hall finished the day with six strikeouts, following his 11 K performance last Friday. Brayden Nelson threw two innings of scoreless relief work before Junior Obeso came in for the eighth. Josh Rutland earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth for the Bronchos.

Williams led the Bronchos with three hits and two RBIs on the day. Harrel also scattered three hits on the day and also had two RBIs. West and Kropf both had two hits on the day.

Central Oklahoma and Arkansas Tech will play two more times this weekend – Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Drury (Mo.) will also be in Edmond Saturday and will play UCO at noon before playing Arkansas Tech at 3 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
