UCO Downed By Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team lost 8-5 to Oklahoma Christian Sunday night in the final game of the Edmond First Pitch Classic at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos are 1-2 on the season after the inaugural festival that brought eight high quality Division II schools together at UCO.

"We got into a problem again making good contact and just didn't hit the ball well," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We gave up just a little bit too much on the mound and we didn't respond. But we're underway now with the new season and now we know what we need to work on and the guys know what it's going to take, we just need to go do it."

Colton Croft made his first career appearance Sunday night and ended the night taking his first career loss. The redshirt freshman out of Broken Arrow, Okla. threw 3 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, five runs, and four walks. He did strike out three batters, including the first batter he ever faced as a collegiate athlete.

But Croft allowed a run in the first and another in the second. He gave up two more in the fourth before being replaced by Brent Stephens. Croft had one runner on base under his hat and that was the fifth run. After three and a half innings, the Bronchos trailed 5-0.

UCO got one back in the fourth on a Paul Kropf solo home run. OC then answered with two more in the fifth to make it 7-1 though.

The Bronchos made their best effort in the bottom of the fifth.

Ryan Harrel led off with a walk and moved to third when Philip Scott doubled to right field. Kropf then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Harrel and make it 7-2. Then Kyle Crowl blasted a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left field to score Scott and Kace Massner, who walked before Kropf's at bat, and make the score 7-5.

The Eagles added their final run in the seventh, an unearned score to reliever Ty Medina.

UCO relievers Junior Obeso and Josh Rutland kept Oklahoma Christian at bay in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but the Broncho bats couldn't string together enough to comeback.

The Bronchos scattered eight hits on the day, with Crowl's three leading the way. Scott had two of his own. UCO though, left eight runners on base. Central Oklahoma's pitching staff ended the night with nine strikeouts.

The Bronchos are back in action next week. UCO travels to Russellville, Ark. for a three-game stand with Arkansas Tech. UCO will also play a single game against Drury (Mo.) there on Saturday before the second game of its series with ATU.

Central Oklahoma returns to Wendell Simmons Field on Wednesday, Feb. 13 for a matchup against Southwestern Oklahoma.
