Central Oklahoma Falls To Northeastern State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team fell short to Northeastern State 74-71 on Tuesday night.

The Bronchos move to 11-16 overall and 4-14 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

"It's tough to lose but especially when it was this close at the end." UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "I'm proud of guys for stepping up and crashing the boards. We played well as a team tonight, despite losing. We need to get in the gym and get ready for the next one."

Adarius Avery led the Bronchos with 29 points and eight rebounds. The senior went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Colt Savage added 15 points and five rebounds. He went 3-for-5 from the 3-point line. Josh Holliday had 12 points and Dashon Bell had 10.

The Bronchos shot 47.1 percent from the field and 33.3 from three-point range. They continue to knock down free-throws, averaging 85 percent this matchup. UCO got 16 of their points from NSU turnovers. The Broncho defense forced 10 Riverhawk turnovers.

The first half started out quick with a jump shot in the corner from Avery to start the Bronchos off. The Riverhawks answered with a 3-pointer at the top of the key. UCO then couldn't get some shots to fall on their end and NSU continued to get in the lane for some easy points.

Five minutes into the half, Bell knocked down a 3-point field goal to make it a tie game. The Bronchos gained the lead again since the beginning from a 3-pointer from Savage. The Bronchos then scored the next four points of the game and went up by six.

NSU didn't let that last long and knocked down shots on their end to regain the lead. The game continued to go back-and-forth. With four minutes left, NSU scored an easy layup right under the basket to extend their lead to eight. They kept that lead until knocking down a layup at the buzzer to go into halftime with a ten-point lead.

Both of the teams came out of the locker room playing much like the first half. NSU knocked down more shots early in the half and had a lead of 14 with 14 minutes left in the game. The Bronchos began their run chipping at that lead with a tough layup from Savage. NSU went down and missed a field goal on their end so the Bronchos got the ball back for a big three from Savage again.

NSU answered though, knocking down a three. Savage wasn't done and knocked down yet another three to chip NSU's lead to four with five minutes left in the game. The Bronchos forced a turnover which led to a technical foul on the Riverhawks bench and Avery went to the free-throw line.

He knocked both the free-throws down and UCO was down by two. NSU tried for a three to answer on their end but didn't get it and it was the Bronchos ball again with three minutes to go. They got the ball to Holliday in the corner to knock down a big three and UCO led by one.

The Bronchos got a blocking foul on the other end trying to take a charge and NSU knocked down both free throws. NSU knocked down a three with a minute left that really set them apart from UCO.

The game went back-and-forth with seconds left on the clock getting each team to the free-throw line, but the Bronchos were down by one and forced to foul to try and get the ball back. There wasn't enough time on the clock and they fell short.

UCO is back in action on Saturday, March 2 against Emporia State at 3:30 p.m. in Hamilton Field House as they close out their regular season.
