UCO Season Ends With Loss To Emporia

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team fell short to Emporia State 100-95 to end their 2018-19 season.

"I'm proud of our guys for the tough fight. They battled the entire game and although we didn't come out on top for our final game I can't say enough about this group of guys and how they continued to fight and play hard every game."

Adarius Avery led the Bronchos with a season-high 37 points and added 11 rebounds. He played all 40 minutes and went 16 of 22 from the field. Colt Savage added 16 points, going 2-for-4 from the 3-point line. Josh Holliday added 13 and Dashon Bell added 10.

The Bronchos shot 54.5 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range. Leading the MIAA in free-throw percentage, they came in with a 81.3 percent from the field against the Hornets.

The first half got started quick for the Bronchos when Avery took it right to the basket and drew the foul, knocking down both free-throws. The Hornets went down on their end and knocked down a jumper. UCO took it back down and got it to London at the top of the key for a three-pointer.

The ball-game was back and forth in the first half, each team not keeping their lead too long. The Bronchos took the lead with five minutes left when Holliday drained a long three-pointer. The Hornets answered, but not for long. Dashon Bell took his man one-on-one to score the easy layup. Savage knocked down a three deep in the corner and UCO was up by seven.

With a little over a minute left Avery took it in and scored an impressive contested layup to move the lead to nine. The Hornets scored on their end, not making it easy for the Bronchos. UCO had a tough foul with just seconds left and ESU knocked down both to shorten UCO's lead to just five at halftime.

The second half came out strong for both teams and UCO led until 14 minutes left in the second half from two scored free-throws by the Hornets. With a little under 10 minutes left, Marquis took it into the paint and missed, but Avery was there to tip it in.

The Hornets led most of the second half. With over a minute left in the matchup, Josh Holliday knocked down two free-throws to chip ESU's lead to just four. The Bronchos found Avery for a big dunk with a minute left and ESU was only up by two.

ESU knocked down a shot at the end and got the foul, knocking down the free-throw to top off the game. The Bronchos continued to fight and try to score but it just wasn't enough to catch back up.

The Bronchos end their season with a record of 11-17 overall and 4-15 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
