Central Tops Kearney

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma defeated Nebraska Kearney 88-83 on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton Field House. The Bronchos move to 11-15 overall and 4-13 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

"I'm extremely proud of our guys today." UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "They executed well today and played as a team. We had good ball movement and crashed the boards well. I'm proud of the guys for stepping up off the bench and doing their part."

Adarius Avery led the Bronchos on the day with 35 points and 10 rebounds. He went 11-for-15 from the field and 13-for-18 from the free-throw line. Josh Holliday added 17 points, going 2-for-3 from the 3-point line. Colt Savage came off the bench and added 14 for the Bronchos.

UCO shot 53.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. They shot 79.3 percent from the free-throw line. The UCO defense forced 10 Loper turnovers that resulted in 12 points.

The first half started out slow for the Bronchos after they put three on the board quick. The Lopers went on a 11-0 run in the first five minutes of the game taking the lead 13-3. Avery stopped the Loper streak taking it into the paint and drawing the foul and knocking down one of his free-throws.

Holliday got a rally started with an and-1 in the paint and knocked down his free-throw. With 13 minutes to go, UNK drew the foul and got to the free-throw line, knocking down one. The Bronchos came down quick, Holliday driving it in and dishing it to London for a three-point field goal to shorten the Lopers lead to just four.

The Bronchos tied it up with about eleven minutes to go in the first half from a three-point field goal at the top of the key from Johnson. UNK missed their field-goal on their possession and the Bronchos got the ball back. UCO took their first lead since the start of the game from a jumper on the baseline from Avery.

The game was back-and-forth the rest of the game both teams getting good looks in the paint. The Bronchos moved the ball around the court trying to get a good look before halftime. With 20 seconds to go, London dished it to Johnson for a 3-pointer to make the score 44-43 going into halftime.

The second half started off with Johnson getting it to Avery for an easy layup in the paint. UNK answered with a layup on their end. With 17 minutes to go, Johnson penetrated and got Savage in the corner for a three-point field goal to extend UCO's lead to four.

The second half was much like the first with both scoring on their end. With about eight minutes to go Avery went up for a layup, missed, but got his own rebound for the put back to push the Bronchos up by two.

With four minutes to go, Savage crashed the boards and got an offensive put back from Bell's missed three. This pushed the Bronchos lead to four. UNK went down and knocked down a field goal to get back up on the scoreboard. UCO got a good look to Avery at the top of the key and he took it in for a layup. This really capped the game off and forced UNK to foul. The Bronchos, 79 percent free-throw shooters, scored the ones at the end and the Lopers couldn't catch up.

The Bronchos are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 26 against Northeastern State in Hamilton Field House at 7:30 p.m. They will finish out their regular season on Saturday, March 2 at 3:30 against Emporia State.
