UCO Downed By Missouri Southern

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped its second game in a row Saturday night, 5-4, falling to Missouri Southern in the second of a three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos are now 6-4 on the season and 0-2 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern is 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in league play. Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We had our chances tonight," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We didn't play very well, but we still had our chances to win this game. Our goal is to win every MIAA series and now we missed our mark in the first series. That's disappointing. But we'll go out and fight tomorrow and do our best to get back in the win column."

UCO led 4-3 after a big, seventh inning rally. The Bronchos plated three in the inning after a quiet night through the first six innings.

Brice West led off with a single, and T.K. McWhertor followed that with a walk. Brock Schaffer then singled on a bunt to the pitcher, and moved up to second after the MSSU arm misfired on the throw to first. West scored on the play to make it 3-2. Crit Williams grounded out to shortstop on the next play, but scored Brock Ruminer, who pinch-ran for McWhertor, to the game, 3-3, with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Dru Barrier then smacked an RBI single to right field to score Schaffer and give the Bronchos the 4-3 lead.

Unfortunately, with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, West dove for a fly ball to right field and missed, allowing two Missouri Southern runs to score on the play. That gave MSSU the 5-4 lead. Central could not recover.

Junior Obeso took the loss for the Bronchos after two innings of relief work. He allowed three runs on two hits and two walks. He also struck out three batters. Obeso is 0-1 on the season.

Spencer Van Scoyoc made his Central debut starting on the mound for the Bronchos. The junior righty struck out four in three innings of work. He allowed two runs, one earned, and only one hit on the night.

Brayden Nelson was strong in relief for the Bronchos, throwing three scoreless innings. He struck out six in his time. Landon Bond also threw one inning and struck out three.

The Broncho pitching staff continues to put out good efforts on the bump. UCO tallied 16 strikeouts Saturday. Central Oklahoma has 108 strikeouts in 10 games, and has five times recorded more than 10 in a game.

Philip Scott led the Bronchos at the plate Saturday night, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The junior infielder is now hitting .429 on the season with a team-high six extra base hits.

Barrier was also 2-for-4 on the night with a pair of singles and one RBI. Paul Kropf went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. The Bronchos scattered nine hits on the night.

Central Oklahoma will meet Missouri Southern once more on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
