Bronchos Drop MIAA Opener

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener Friday afternoon 7-1 to Missouri Southern at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos are now 6-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play. MSSU is 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.

"We just flat out couldn't hit the ball today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We gave up one big inning early and you don't want to do that, but we couldn't respond. We need to forget about this one and come back tomorrow focused and ready to be more aggressive at the plate."

Central Oklahoma scattered five hits on the day in scoring a season low one run. Philip Scott totaled three of those and Kyle Crowl had the other two.

Scott knocked a one-out single in the bottom of the first inning, and after moving up to second on a Paul Kropf groundout, scored when Crowl smacked a two-out RBI single that made it 1-0 UCO.

But Missouri Southern responded with three more in the top of the second to take the lead, then Zach Parish settled in against the Bronchos.

UCO would strike out 16 times Friday afternoon, with Parish recording 14 of them.

Scott doubled in the sixth, then singled in the bottom of the ninth. Crowl followed the latter with a double to give UCO some hope before MSSU closed out the game.

Dylan Hall got the start for the Bronchos and had another strong performance. He struck out 10 batters in five innings of work, but allowed six runs on six hits and also walked four batters.

Colton Croft and Ty Medina combined for four innings of bullpen work Friday. Croft struck out two in two innings while Medina struck out three in two innings.

UCO is up over 100 strikeouts in just nine games this season. The Bronchos have 104 Ks, 11.5 per game.

The teams will play again on Saturday. The second of three games is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
