Heath Leads UCO Past Mountain Lions

EDMOND (Feb. 17) – JoBi Heath tied a single-game school record with three doubles in a 4-for-4 performance at the plate to spark Central Oklahoma to a 7-3 victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon on the second day of the Raising Cane's Softball Invitational.

Heath had run-scoring doubles in the first and sixth innings in addition to doubling in the third and reaching on an infield single in the fifth.  The senior standout now has seven doubles on the season and ranks third on UCO's career list with 53.

The Bronchos improved to 12-1 on the season with their eighth straight win.  Central wraps up the weekend with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Northwestern Oklahoma.

Sydney McLeod started and went the first four innings to pick up the pitching win, moving to 6-1. Freshman Bailey McKittrick threw three shutout innings to earn the first save of her career.

UCO took the lead in its first at bat of the game.  Hazel Puempel led off with a walk and stole second, Halley Randolph walked and then Heath ripped a run-scoring double to right-center field before Carli Jones' RBI groundout made it 2-0.

The Mountain Lions moved in front with three runs -- two of those unearned -- in the top of the fourth to end McLeod's impressive 22-inning scoreless streak that stretched over five games.

Central regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on Puempel's two-run single.  Lexy Dobson started the inning with a lead-off single, Webb had a one-out base hit and Brighton Gilbert reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Puempel, who delivered with a hard-hit single through the middle.

Webb's RBI fielder's choice bumped the lead to 5-3 in the fifth and UCO wrapped up the scoring in the sixth.

Bailey Thompson reached on a fielder's choice and Randolph walked before Heath piped her record-tying double to center field to score Thompson.  Jones walked to load the bases and Dobson followed with an RBI fielder's choice to make it 7-3.
