Bronchos Fall At Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team dropped an MIAA road game at Northeastern State Saturday, falling 80-68. Central is now 3-7 overall this season and 0-2 in league play.

A trio of scorers led the Bronchos Saturday. Dashawn McDowell, Dashon Bell, and Colt Savage all scored 13 points. McDowell added a team-high 10 rebounds and made four assists. Savage had six rebounds. Bell led the team with five assists.

Central Oklahoma went back and forth with NSU for the first 10 minutes of the game. The Bronchos and the Riverhawks exchanged leads four times in that span. Unfortunately for Central, an 11-9 lead with 11:48 to play would be the last lead of the game.

Despite an 11-0 run that extinguished the Central lead, UCO did fight back to keep it close in the first half. The Bronchos made a late rally to cut the lead to six on three different occasions. McDowell's layup with seven seconds to go in the first half made it 31-25, NSU, and that's how the team's went to the locker room at halftime.

UCO hit just 1 of 10 threes in the first half and shot 35.7 percent from the floor overall, making 10 of 28 total shots. UCO also hit 4 of 7 free-throws.

UCO kept that late first-half rally going into the second half. Justin Nimmer hit a 3-pointer 34 seconds into the half to cut the lead in half. Then Bell knocked down a jump shot with 19:04 to play that made it 31-30.

The Bronchos had to continue to fight the rest of the way. Central was within a possession on two more occasions with 13 minutes to play and then within four with six minutes to play, but the Bronchos couldn't get any closer down the stretch.

UCO finished the game shooting 38.9 percent, making 21 of 54 shots. The Bronchos hit 5 of 19 threes and made 21 of 27 free-throw attempts.

Jalyn Turner added seven points and hit one 3-pointer. Seth Hurd scored six points and grabbed three rebounds. Nimmer scored five, Carson Calavan and Camryn Givens scored four, and D.J. Basey added three points to round out the scoring for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma is off until next Saturday, when the Bronchos will travel to Tulsa for an exhibition match with Oral Roberts. UCO returns home from its four-game road trip and will host Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday, Dec. 17.
