Central Oklahoma Comes Up Short At Northwestern

ALVA, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team couldn't overcome a cold shooting night Saturday and lost to Northwestern Oklahoma State, 63-55, in the MIAA/GAC/NSIC Challenge at Northwestern's Percefull Fieldhouse.

"We played hard tonight, we just couldn't make enough shots," UCO men's head coach Bob Hoffman said. "I know we can score more than what we've done in the first two games. We'll get better. We need to continue to grow together and stick together and fight the way these guys did this weekend."

Central Oklahoma shot 35 percent from the field and hit just 3 of 14 from behind the arc Saturday. The Bronchos also shot only 58 percent from the free-throw line (18-for-31).

Justin Nimmer led the way for the Bronchos, scoring a team-high 17 points on 7 of 15 shooting. He hit one from deep and made two free-throws. The redshirt freshman also had five rebounds and three steals.

Alex Ogunseye added nine points and Colt Savage scored eight. Dashon Bell had a team-high seven rebounds.

The first half went back and forth, with seven lead changes. Ogunseye made a layup and a free-throw in the first minute of action and Camryn Givens sank a 3-pointer two minutes into play and Central led 6-1. But after D.J. Basey put the Bronchos up 8-6 with 16+ to play, Northwestern responded with a 9-0 run.

Central continued to fight and keep it close, tying the game and retaking the lead on a pair of Bell free-throws with 7:27 to play. UCO was up 21-20 at that time. But the Bronchos wouldn't lead again.

Northwestern ended the half on a 9-2 run and took a 29-23 run into the locker room at the break. That lead in the second half ballooned to 14, 47-33, with 12:44 to play.

UCO never gave up though, chipping away and chipping away. The Bronchos kept it between 8-10 most of the second half, getting as close as six on a Nimmer dunk with 3:07 to play. The score was 57-51. Unfortunately for Central, the tale of the game continued. NWOSU sank a three on the next possession. Nimmer's three with 24 seconds to play cut it to six again, 61-55, but the Bronchos ran out of time.

Central Oklahoma is 0-2 on the young season. The Bronchos will trek to Oklahoma City next, playing at Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday night. UCO still has a trip to Warrensburg, Mo. next weekend before playing its first home game of the 2019-20 season Wednesday, Nov. 20 against Midwestern State.
