UCO Earns First Win In Bob Hoffman Era

OKLAHOMA CITY – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team beat Oklahoma Christian 63-44 Tuesday night to earn first-year head coach Bob Hoffman his first win at the control of the Bronchos.

"Those guys deserve getting the W today," Hoffman said. "They really worked during the week. The really persevered tonight. I love our energy, I loved our bench. Everyone is supporting each other and that's what you got to have."

Justin Nimmer led the Bronchos with 15 points on the night. He added seven rebounds and a blocked shot. Dashawn McDowell also scored in double figures, putting up 12 points and five rebounds. Dashon Bell added 11 points and had three steals.

Central Oklahoma trailed for less than two minutes Tuesday night. Oklahoma Christian hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring, but UCO was quick to take the lead as it went on a 9-0 run.

McDowell made a layup to get the Bronchos on the board before Camryn Givens knocked down a 3-pointer of his own to put the Bronchos up 5-3. Central never trailed again.

Bell and McDowell both made layups after that to put the Bronchos up 9-3. That was the biggest lead of the first half for Central, as OC wouldn't go away quietly.

Central didn't give them a choice in the second half though. The Bronchos came out of the locker room and went on an 8-0 run to go up 31-21.

Alex Ogunseye started it off with a jumper, then Bell hit a pair of free-throws. Givens then made a layup before Ogunseye scored again to cap off the run.

OC finally scored to end the run, but Bell knocked down a huge three to get the Bronchos going again. McDowell made a layup and drew a foul after that. His free-throw made it 37-23, UCO, and the Bronchos were in control from that point on.

UCO shot 44 percent on the night, hitting 22 of 50 shots overall. The Bronchos made 6 of 11 3-pointers (54.5 percent) and also hit 13 of 18 free-throws.

Ogunseye scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds. Givens scored seven to go with six rebounds and two steals. Carson Calavan scored six off the bench and Seth Hurd and D.J. Basey added two points apiece.

Hoffman brought 600 wins to Central. He's got one now for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma will continue a season-opening five-game road trip. The Bronchos visit Warresnburg, Mo. for Central Missouri's Fairfield Inn Classic. UCO will play William Jewell on Saturday before taking on Upper Iowa this Sunday. Central Oklahoma opens the doors to Hamilton Field House for the first time next Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. tipoff against Midwestern State.
