Central Obliterates Northeastern To Retain Cup

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma football team set a handful of records in an 82-14 win over Northeastern State Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos with the win retained The President's Cup for the sixth consecutive season.

Central Oklahoma improved to 5-5 with the win.

"I'm happy for that senior group to have a win in their last home game and get to keep the cup," UCO head football coach Nick Bobeck said. "That group has never lost the cup and that's a big deal, that's hard to do, and it's really good to send them out with the win."

UCO's 82 points Saturday are the most in a game by the Bronchos since 1922, when Central scored 118 against the former Carver College. It's also a new Wantland Stadium record. The 68-point margin of victory is also a record in the stadium Central has called home in 1965.

UCO got off to a good start and never let up Saturday. After forcing a three & out on the first defensive effort of the game, UCO kicked a field goal to open the scoring on its first offensive effort. The Bronchos forced another three & out, then went petal to the metal for the next two and a half hours.

UCO scored touchdowns on the next three possessions to go up 24-0 before the end of the first quarter.

Dustin Basks caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Brandon George with 8:15 to go. George ran it in himself from eight yards out with 1:51 to go. Then Drequan Brown sacked the NSU quarterback, forced a fumble, picked it up and scored with five seconds left. That made it 24-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Northeastern got the first of its two touchdowns finally after grabbing an interception at the UCO goal line. The Riverhawks went 63 yards on four plays to make it 24-7 with 10:31 to play in the second.

UCO wouldn't be deterred.

Josh Moore caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from George. Isaiah Feaster scored a safety on the next play from scrimmage. And after getting the ball back, Taj Griffin capped a 6-play, 64-yard scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. That made it 40-7 with 4:30 to play in the first half. NSU added its second touchdown with 49 seconds left in the quarter to make it 40-14 at halftime.

Central then came out of the locker room and had its best quarter of the afternoon in the third.

Brandon George hit Dawson Huddleston for a 12-yard to cap off an 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Kolby Underwood then grabbed an interception two plays later and returned it 27 yards for a score. T.J. Roberts followed those with three consecutive rushing touchdowns of 18, one, and two yards. The latter, with 55 seconds to play in the third, gave Central a 75-14 lead.

Saboor Daniels added a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the final tally on the scoreboard.

George, making his Broncho debut, led UCO with 119 yards rushing and one touchdown. The sophomore quarterback also was 13-for-20 with 257 yards and three touchdowns.

Griffin also had 100 yards on the day. The senior running back had 114 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. He added one catch for 38 yards.

Roberts added 95 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. It's the second consecutive game Roberts has rushed for three touchdowns.

Basks had five catches for 58 yards and one score in just a half of play. Moore had two catches for 60 yards and one score. Amonte Phillips had two catches for 51 yards.

Brown led the defensive effort with four tackles and a sack. Derrick Shaw had one sack, as did Steven Krager. O'Shay Harris and Shaw had a team-high six tackles. Underwood had his team-leading fourth interception of the year. He added three tackles. Brown and Bryan Burns forced fumbles on the day, with Brown, Jeremiah Hill, and Isaiah Major recovering fumbles. Major recovered a fumble and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown, however a personal foul before the end of the play nixed the score.

Central Oklahoma's 646 yards of total offense is the fifth-most in school history. The Bronchos tallied 389 yards rushing and added George's 257 yards passing to reach the mark.

The Bronchos, now 5-5 on the season, will head to Emporia State for the final game of the 2019 regular season next Saturday. Kickoff in Emporia, Kan. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
