Bronchos Steamroll Drury In Opener

EDMOND (Nov. 3) – Noah McQuigg and Kalin Winkler scored first-period falls, Garrett Beier added a second-period pin and No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma flattened Drury 41-3 Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos recorded four other bonus-point wins in the season-opening rout, with the lone loss a last-second upset at 141 pounds.

"It was a good start for us," head coach Todd Steidley said. "Most of our guys were really aggressive in going after bonus points and that's what you like to see. Obviously we still have a long, long ways to go, but I like the direction we're headed."

McQuigg and Winkler didn't waste time in ending their matches.

McQuigg built a quick 10-0 lead over Chris Hansen at 133 before getting the fall at the 1:03 mark, while Winkler got an early takedown against Trenton Clines at 197 and ended it in 1:44.

Beier took a little longer, ending the dual with a pin in 3:37 at heavyweight.

Central also got a technical fall from 165 Dayton Garrett, with 149 Brik Filippo, 174 Gage McBride and 184 Heath Gray adding major decisions.

Garrett had four near-falls and took only 2:19 to rack up the 15 points needed for his technical fall.

Filippo had five takedowns in a 14-2 rout, McBride overcame an early 2-0 deficit in a 14-5 romp and the second-ranked Gray racked up five takedowns in cruising to a 14-2 victory.

UCO's lone loss came at 141, where seventh-ranked Nate Keim fell 5-3 to Peter Kuster on Kuster's reverse with one second remaining.

The Bronchos return to action Saturday, going to Oklahoma City for the OCU Open.
