UCO Ousted In Conference Tourney

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Nov. 21) – Central Oklahoma battled hard, but in the end didn't have enough to stay up with No. 10-ranked Central Missouri in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Hy-Vee Arena.

The Bronchos had their season ended with a 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-17 loss. UCO finished the year 18-13 while the Jennies improved to 22-8 in moving into Friday's semifinals against No. 3-rated Washburn.

"I'm really proud of the way we fought today," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Central Missouri has a great team and they just had more weapons than we do, but our girls didn't back down. We competed until the last point and that's all you can ask.

"We have a really young team and I thought we made a lot of progress this season. I'm excited about the future of our program."

Freshman Courtney Lane led the Bronchos with 17 kills and 22 digs, while sophomore Lauren Jenkins had 10 kills. Dominique Lipari – the team's lone senior – ended her career with another stout defensive outing on the back row, making 32 digs.

Sophomore Amanda Desch contributed 28 assists, 15 digs, five kills and two blocks. Junior Malia Kaaiohelo and freshman Bailey Combs had six kills each, with sophomore Nalani McCrary chipping in five kills and three blocks.

UCO fell behind 6-3 in the first set before bouncing back with a 10-3 to take a 13-9 lead on Lane's kill. A Desch ace had the Bronchos on top 16-13 and it was a 19-18 lead after a Jenkins kill, but the Jennies surged in front with a 6-0 run and went on to take the win.

Central was down 18-10 in the second set before rallying to get back in it. Desch and Jenkins had Kills and Lane an ace in a 5-0 run that cut UCM's lead to 18-15, but the Bronchos could get closer in falling into a 2-0 hole.

Lane took charge early in the third set to give UCO a sizeable lead, knocking down three straight kills in a 5-0 spurt that made it 6-1. The margin grew to 10-4 after back-to-back kills by Combs and it was an 18-8 advantage after a Lane kill.

The Jennies came back with a 13-4 run to get within 22-21 before the Bronchos scored three straight points to close it out. Kaaiohelo and Lane teamed up for a block, McCray had a kill and then combined with Desch for a block on match point to keep UCO alive.

But there would be no miracle comeback for the Bronchos. UCO fell behind 5-1 to start the fourth set and never recovered as the Jennies went on to close out the match and advance to Friday's semifinals.

Lipari ended the season with 750 kills, which ranks second on the school's single-season list.
