Bronchos Hold Off Midwestern State

EDMOND (Nov. 20) – Dashawn McDowell made four clutch free throws down the stretch and scored 20 points as Central Oklahoma squeezed past Midwestern State 73-72 Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House.

It was the home opener for the Bronchos, who built a 13-point second-half lead before holding off the Mustangs in the final minutes. UCO improved to 2-4 on the young season.

"We took care of the ball tonight with 16 assists and just nine turnovers," head coach Bob Hoffman said. "That might have been our best floor game of the year, though we could have guarded better.

"We put a W on our forehead tonight and that's the big thing. We might not have done everything right, but we found a way to get it done. It was a great team effort."

McDowell hit 8-of-12 shots and 4-of-6 free throws in his 20-point outing. Camryn Givens was the only other player in double figures with 10.

Carson Calavan had nine points, six assists, two steals and no turnovers while running the offense. Justin Nimmer chipped in seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Bronchos appeared in control after taking a 13-point lead at 66-53 on McDowell's layup in traffic with 8:29 remaining, but MSU scored eight straight points to quickly get back in the contest.

It was a two-point lead (69-67) when McDowell went to the line for a one-and-one and calmly swished both foul shots. Neither team scored again until MSU hit a layup at 0:15 to make it 71-69 and McDowell was quickly fouled.

The junior forward again converted the one-and-one to push the lead back to four (73-69), with MSU hitting one of two free throws at 0:08 to make it 73-70.

UCO missed the front end of a one-and-one a second later and the Mustangs passed up a tying 3-point try for a layup to pull within 73-72 with less than a second left and the Bronchos secured the win.

Central had a tough time containing MSU's D'monta Harris, who was 8-of-9 from 3-point range in scoring 36 points. The Bronchos forced 18 turnovers, turning those into 32 points.

The game was close throughout the first half and UCO was down four (39-35) before ending the half on a 9-2 run to take the lead for good. McDowell's layup with five seconds left gave the Bronchos a 44-41 halftime advantage.

That lead grew to 13 (61-48) on Nimmer's 3-pointer from the corner at the 10:57 mark and again at 66-53 on McDowell's inside bucket, but Harris and the Mustangs soon made things interesting.

UCO is home again next Tuesday, hosting Southwestern Chritian at 7 p.m.
