Central Cruises Past SCU

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team wrapped up a brief two-game homestand Tuesday night with an 85-49 non-conference win over Southwestern Christian.
 
UCO improved to 3-4 with the win. Central will play its next four on the road before returning to Hamilton Field House Dec. 17.
 
"I like the way we played together tonight," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We played hard and that helped us get a good flow. We shot the ball well tonight too and that always helps. It's always good to get out of here with a win."
 
Dashawn McDowell and Colt Savage led the way with 18 points apiece. McDowell hit 5 of 7 shots and all eight of his free-throw attempts. Savage had a career-high 18 behind a 6-for-9 day from behind the arc.
 
Central built an early 4-0 lead Tuesday. McDowell scored a layup for the game's first basket. Then Justin Nimmer slammed home a fastbreak dunk after a steal by Camryn Givens to put the Bronchos ahead, 4-0.
 
After SCU got on the board, UCO held a slight lead at 8-5, then went on a 10-0 run to blow it open. Colt Savage and Jayln Turner hit threes, Nimmer and Carson Calavan also made baskets, the Bronchos held SCU to 0-for-7 during a 3:57 stretch and led 18-5.
 
UCO built its largest lead of the half, 33-11, with a minute and a half to play. UCO's 14-4 run to extend its lead was sparked by five points from Dashon Bell and Givens, as well as a pair of buckets from Seth Hurd and Nimmer. UCO hit a pair of threes and a pair of free-throws while forcing four turnovers during the stretch.
 
Nimmer's eight points led the Bronchos after the first half.
 
UCO continued to pour it on in the second half, taking a 29-point lead in the game with nine minutes to play. Central shot 72.7 percent from the floor during the first 10 minutes of the second half, hitting 8 of 11 shots. The Bronchos hit three from outside and made 9 of 10 free-throws during that stretch as it outscored SCU 24-17.
 
Central's defense continued to shine as the game wound down. The Bronchos held a Southwestern Christian team averaging 86.4 points per game to 37 points below its average.
 
Bell scored 13 points to join McDowell and Savage in double figures and Turner scored 11 points on three makes from outside. Nimmer added nine points.
 
Central Oklahoma will hit the road again after its brief two-game homestand. The Bronchos play at Cameron Saturday.
