UCO Downed In Matchup Against William Jewell

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team dropped a close 71-63 decision against William Jewell Saturday night in the first of two games for the Bronchos at Central Missouri's Fairfield Inn Classic.

Central Oklahoma is 1-3 on the season following the loss. The Bronchos play their second game in the weekend festival Sunday at 2 p.m. against Upper Iowa.

"We didn't get into a rhythm on offense and couldn't make enough shots tonight," UCO head basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "I do think we played hard and that kept us in the game, but we need to make more shots to get on the right side of the win column."

Central Oklahoma shot 45 percent from the floor Saturday. Both teams made 25 total field goals and UCO made 13 free-throws for William Jewell's 14 made shots from the line. The difference in the game however came from behind the arc.

Central Oklahoma did not make a 3-pointer Saturday. It's the first time in 33 seasons that has happened. UCO had a streak of 941 consecutive games with a made 3-pointer snapped. The streak dates back to the 1987-88 season. The Bronchos had made a 3-pointer in all but one game since the line was instituted that season.

William Jewell took a lead on the game's opening possession. Central spent the rest of the night working to come back.

The Bronchos got their first lead of the game late in the first half. After trailing 18-11, UCO reeled off five in a row to cut the lead to two, then after trailing 20-16, went for five in a row again and took a 21-20 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the opening 20 minutes.

The runs continued. WJU scored seven straight after UCO finally took the lead and regained a 27-21 advantage. Then in the final minutes of the half, the Bronchos rattled off eight straight points to take a 30-29 lead. William Jewell closed the half the way they started it, knocking down a shot from the outside to take a 32-30 halftime lead.

William Jewell led by as many as seven early in the second half, but the Bronchos kept it close. UCO came back to tie the game, 45-45, with just under 12 minutes to play. Then WJU got back up by six with around seven minutes to play, but UCO battled back again and cut the lead to 57-56 with 5:59 to go in the game.

Central kept it within a possession for the next three and a half minutes before William Jewell went up 65-60 with 2:28 to play. And a Broncho layup with 1:10 to play made it 65-63. However, in the end, the Bronchos couldn't get over the hump.

William Jewell went 6-for-6 from the line in the final 1:06 and the Bronchos went 0-for-4 from the field in that stretch.

Dashawn McDowell led the Bronchos in scoring Saturday, putting in a season-high 21 points on 7 of 10 shooting. He also made 7 of 11 free-throws and added six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Justin Nimmer and Alex Ogunseye both scored 10 points Saturday. Nimmer's 10 rebounds were a game high.

Central Oklahoma will turn around and face Upper Iowa Sunday afternoon before returning to Edmond, Okla. to open the doors to Hamilton Field House for the first time this season next Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Midwestern State.
