Bronchos Get Past Fort Hays State

EDMOND (Oct. 26) – Lauren Jenkins had 14 kills to lead a balanced Central Oklahoma attack that carried the Bronchos past Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO prevailed in a back-and-fourth fourth-set battle that featured 37 ties and 18 lead changes, winning 25-23, 21-25, 25-13, 25-17 for their eighth straight win over the Tigers. The Bronchos improved to 16-8 on the season and 8-6 in the league.

"It was a tough match and fortunately we made a few more plays than they did," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We had stretches where we played pretty well, but we just weren't very consistent."

Jenkins hit .375 in finishing with a match-high 14 kills and was one of three UCO players in double digits. Courtney Lane had 13 kills and 13 digs, while Amanda Desch did a little bit of everything with 12 kills, 23 assists, 15 digs and six total blocks.

The Bronchos also got nine kills from Bailey Combs. Dominique Lipari contributed 23 digs and Ericka Scholl had 18 assists and 14 digs.

There were 12 ties and seven lead changes in the first set alone, with UCO overcoming a 12-8 deficit to pull out that win, which Jenkins ended with her fourth kill of the set.

FHSU broke away from a 17-all tie to take the second set and tie the match before the Bronchos claimed the final two sets to close out the match.

Central was down 10-9 in the third set before ripping off 10 unanswered points, nine of those coming with Jordan Cramer on serve. That gave the Bronchos a 19-10 lead and Chloe Hancock had two kills and a block the rest of the way to finish it out.

UCO rallied again in the fourth set, using an 8-1 run to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 16-11 lead en route to closing out the match.

The Bronchos a three-match league road-swing Tuesday, going to Joplin, Mo. for a 6 p.m. contest against Missouri Southern.
