Alex Quevedo Field Goal In Final Seconds Sends UCO To Victory

EDMOND – Alex Quevedo kicked a 20-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game and the University of Central Oklahoma football team beat Washburn 22-20 in an MIAA affair Saturday afternoon.

Quevedo's kick followed a huge, 31-yard quarterback scramble by Chandler Garrett to put the Bronchos with a first & 10 inside the Washburn 10-yard line. The field goal capped off a 10-play, 71-yard scoring drive.

With 2:50 to play in the game, Garrett started the drive with a 7-yard run, but a pair of incomplete passes setup an early 4th & 3 that could've halted the drive as soon as it began. But Garrett then darted for a gain of six to earn the first down. He then ran for eight before a complete pass to Amonte Phillips for an eight-yard gain, crossing midfield and setting up a first down at the Washburn 45.

After a run for no gain, UCO called a timeout with 49 seconds left. On the next play, Washburn jumped offsides. Garrett heaved a ball down the sideline to Phillips on what was a free play, but the pass fell incomplete and Central took its five yards. Now 2nd & 5, Garrett hit T.J. Roberts for a 3-yard catch. That setup 3rd & five from the Washburn 37.

Garrett dropped back to pass, then darted through the middle of the line and made a big juke move on two Washburn defenders and burst downfield for the 31-yard rush to the Washburn six with just six seconds left. A personal foul after the play put the ball on the 3-yard line. UCO used its final timeout and then Quevedo knocked in the kick for the win.

Washburn attempted numerous laterals on the ensuing kickoff but to no avail and Central got out of the Kansas state capital with the victory.

"We fought hard today in game that had a bunch of mistakes," UCO head coach Nick Bobeck said. "But our defense played their tails off and they deserve a lot of credit. And our offense came up big in the end, credit to those guys too for never giving up."

UCO is now 3-5 on the season with three games left on the schedule. The Bronchos have two home games left, each in the next two weeks.

Garrett led the Bronchos with 84 yards rushing on 21 carries. He had a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that put UCO up 19-13. Garrett was also 14-for-34 passing with 134 yards and one touchdown. He connected with Dustin Basks for a 26-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter that put the Bronchos up 12-7.

Basks's 66 yards on eight catches led the team. Roberts also had 76 yards on eight carries, including a 44-yard rush that was the longest play from scrimmage of the afternoon.

Washburn took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after a game-opening 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive. The Bronchos responded with an 8-play, 47-yard scoring drive that ended with Quevedo hitting a 36-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 7:59 to play in the opening quarter.

After the next eight drives ended with no scores, Central used a big punt to pin Washburn down at its own 1-yard line. WU got out to its six, but after dropping back to pass, Mike Rios sacked Ichabod quarterback Mitch Schurig in the end zone for a safety. That made it 7-5 with 5:46 to play in the first half.

UCO opened the second half with a 5-play, 85-yard scoring drive. Roberts had his 44-yard scamper on that drive and Basks capped it off with his 26-yard touchdown catch. That put the Bronchos up 12-7. Washburn hit back-to-back field goals to go up 13-12 with 5:24 to go.

Garrett led the Bronchos down the field on a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive that he finished off himself with his 2-yard touchdown run to make it 19-13 with 1:23 to play in the third quarter. Washburn went up 20-19 early in the fourth quarter. UCO punted on two possessions before the big, final drive.

Bryan Burns led UCO with eight tackles on defense. Adrien Cross and Dillon Hall both had seven tackles and Jeremiah Hill had six. Rios had four tackles to go with his sack-safety. Kolby Underwood added three tackles and had has team-leading third interception of the season.

Central Oklahoma hosts Missouri Southern next Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. The Bronchos host Northeastern State the following Saturday at 1 p.m. in the battle for the President's Cup.
